I use a Rickenbacker DW16 with a DW Mark Little Jazz (transistor) combo. Those Ricky horseshoe pickups are still powerful but the DV has a lot of headroom and can handle them well.

I am working on a song where a MXR Phaser 90 pedal definitely adds ambience but it distorts the DV. I experimented with different phaser speeds, changing the amp's tone controls, thinking it may be certain frequencies but the distortion is nearly always audible. Turn the phaser off and there is no distortion. I wondered if putting another pedal after it would hinder or help the problem so I tried a delay pedal - same result, phaser on distortion, phaser off (just delay) clean sound.

The MXR 90 is a blissfully simple pedal to use, just one control. I am going to borrow an amp to see if the problem repeats itself but any ideas are most welcome!

Hi Paul,
Is the MXR Phase 90 using a battery?
If so, maybe it needs a new one.

Have you tried turning the guitar volume down and amp volume up? Are you using a powered volume pedal?

The MXR's normally have some distortion due to the design being for a pickup w less output than a typical steel guitar pickup. The GarageTone Oil Can phase shifter does a better job of not being distorted with a pedal steel pickup.

I'll try and answer all points:
- No battery, I use a power supply;
- No volume pedal between guitar and MXR.
I have tried a different amp and the distortion was different but still present. So then I reduced the guitar's volume control and that helped so I guess that concludes with Jim's point. It's the first time I've used the pedal with the Rick and once more the power of 64 year old pickups is astonishing!

I'm about to invest in a Boss MS-3 and I'll be giving it a thorough test with the Rick before I reach for any other instrument!

Thanks to you all for your contributions

What Jim said. I have the same issue with my steel and phase 90. I just got an Earthquaker Grand Orbiter and that one does not distort.
