| erv, it has the eighth pedal, all it needs is to be put back on the board, it has the crossrod and bellcranks. i put pedal 8 on pedal 4 and omitted the 4th pedal, but it can be easily changed back toorigi al ststus....thanks jack |

| leo, i really do not know when or how it became keyless. who did it if it was modified did a good job, it has very little cabinet drop and sounds great. i also had mr. sonny jenkins from the forum make new keyless tuners for both necks, which also work as they should....thanks jack |

It doesn't look like it ever had a keyhead - there would be empty space, surely?

It might have been cut down. If you look close, pedal 8 (if it were mounted) is almost under the changer. The 8th pedal on a keyed Zum, I don't believe is that close to the changer.
I remember seeing one other keyed guitar that someone made into a keyless guitar. He cut down the body on the keyhead end to eliminate "unoccupied" space. It's been years, and I can't remember who, or what brand guitar.

| pedal 8 is now pedal 4, i don,t use it enought to keep it on there. but the eighth pedal can be installed in a couple of minutes, everything is there to hook it up....thanks jack |

I noticed the 8th pedal as well and I suspect the body of the guitar was cut down when the keyless tuners were installed. |

It hadn't occurred to me that anyone would shorten the body, but clearly they might. Seems like a lot of work, but I suppose it makes sense.

| the body is approximately 4 inches shorter, which evidently makes the cabinet drop less, it has very little cabinet drop. i don,t know if someone made a new body for it, but there is no sign of the cabinet being sawed off. i think the endplates, neck, pedals, etc, are cast....jack |

i do not know if this is out of the ordinary, but the changer has what appears to be an extra part that looks like some kind of a split, u can see what i am talking about in the photo. jack

Bruce did build about 3 keyless guitars that I know of - Doug Ernest has one, and Tommy Dodd had one (which he sold recently on the forum) ... this looks like one of Bruce's builds rather than something someone else cut down.

Of course we won't know for sure without giving BZ a call and asking him personally but the keyless systems he used that I have seen were different from the one on this guitar. The one that comes to mind is Tommy Dodds old guitar. Of course Tommys was a much later model and Jacks is a fairly early model. So there is that...
Jack you could reach out to Bruce and get the scoop on this Zum. Im sure he'd be more than happy to tell you exactly how this guitar left his shop. Its a very cool guitar regardless but it would be important to know the details of how it ended up keyless. |

| as far as the tuners, i think i posted this earlier. the tuners that were with the guitar when i got it were different. mr. sonny jenkins from the forum re-did them. the one,s he did work great and the strings are more easy to put on now....thanks jack |

Jack,
Those screws are for the lowering compensators. There is a tiny compression spring behind the screw that exerts just enough pressure to bump down the lowering finger of a lowered string that returns slightly sharp.
The split tuning screws you see in the changer back plates have most likely added at a later date. I just retrofitted an '85 Zumsteel U-12 with split screws, because they weren't installed by Bruce when he built it.
