Out of curiosity, why do some builders charge more for a pedal or knee lever kit that you install, than having the pedal or lever installed with the guitar? I just happened to be on GFI's website, and to have an extra pedal or lever installed when the guitar is built is $185, but a kit is $250. I have seen this with some other builders too. I figure it is a discount because you are buying a new guitar, but a $65 difference is kind of hard to understand

Richard, mine are the same if you install it or I install it. $150.00 pedal or lever.
I'll only sell kits up yo the 5th lever. (Vertical)

Richard,
That's why when I order a new guitar, I order it loaded up!
The Rains I just sold had 9 foot pedals and 10 knee levers! Whoa!

I'm sure they'd probably say it's for:

instructions
packing
shipping
handling
insurance

etc., etc. Laughing

I would say in those companies that practice the difference do so as a marketing incentive to get the guitar to leave the factory with the extra changes. Offer that at a lower price and the builder has the quality control on the whole job.

One has to figure also, that the team putting the kit together may have to add a few extra parts to ensure nothing gets lost or forgotten in shipping to a costomer, and that there is staff available to answer questions if the individual gets stuck.

When I ordered my Carter in 1999, I ordered it with 8 pedals and 10 knee levers. I took one knee lever off, so it's now 8p/9k. I did order a pedal kit from Carter to install a zero pedal. I could never find a change that I liked enough, and it was uncomfortable to hit, so I removed it and sold it to someone on here.

I just ordered a LKV kit for a GFI S-10. It was $260 total including shipping. No instructions (but he sent a picture of one installed on a D-10), just parts. The person I'm installing it for was willing to pay the price.

Fortunately I got a couple of pictures from others on the forum that have that installed so it helps with placement. I could do it on my own but the pictures "make life easier".

I bought an Emmons p/p that once belonged to Doug Gernigan.
It had 11 foot pedals on it!
I asked Doug about it and he said: "Yes, that was my guitar".

After lots of study of knee levers, my favorite is the current GFI levers. They're installed on brackets that don't attach directly to cross rods, they can be put anywhere you like, and either push or pull to a crossrod via a short linking rod. The brackets are pre-configured to push or pull.

For staggered levers, I feel this flexibility in lever location is unbeatable.

Any thoughts on that, anyone?

Love my GFI but if you ask them this, you won't get a straight answer. The answer is, because they can.

Well, we have no idea how any company prices their finished products vs how they price additional/replacement parts. That's their business...and one would have to assume they are in business to make money.

Lee hit the nail on the head pedal steel builders are not getting rich for sure.
If all new steel sales came from one source it would still be a very small business.
To bad that’s just how it is for know.

Well I Build and sell new Steels. I charge $100.00 per pedal and per knee lever extra when the pedal or knee is added at the time the guitar is ordered.
If you order a pedal or knee lever add on kit after the guitar leaves the shop I charge $150.00 for the kit. Why? Because it takes 2 hours to explain how to put it on over the phone even with detailed instructions and pictures sent with the kit. I tried sending a DVD showing how to do the installs. Know one watched the DVD they just call 5 minutes after they start to install the kit. And there is the reason most builders charge more for the kits.
Not being a smart butt just stating the facts.

I get it and understand , but what about the people who didn't call for assistance ? Curious is all.

Not arguing, you have the right to set the price to whatever you feel is appropriate.

I've purchased kits from both Sho Bud and Emmons, both more expensive with NO instructions or DVD ! Just a bunch of parts in a box ! Very Happy

Sorry, to me, its bad customer service and a bad look for a company to charge $150 for a pedal or lever installed, and $250 for a later ordered customer installed add on... Real bad look...

Ok so you JUSTIFY selling a part for $250 that you yourself would install for $150???. yeah terrific business model, and good way to engender brand loyalty to a customer that OWNS one of your guitars, and perhaps plays it in front of hundreds or thousands of people, and extols its virtues to potential customers.. Sorry, I can't buy this logic..
If you can sell it at a profit installed at $150, do you REALLY need to club an owner over the head when he wants to add on??? Personally I find that pretty greedy.... bob

Over the decades I have bought FACTORY levers, some brand new, some NOS from several builders/suppliers..
MSA/ShoBud/Marlen/Williams/ETS

Not ONCE was I ever charged more than what the builder charged to install them new..So perhaps something has changed and i am way behind the curve as to modern business practice, and thats why I am so adamant.

So a lever is installed at $150 at the factory, and the builder makes a profit.. fine, , I am a capitalist and want everyone in business to do well.

Yet when he sells the exact same part to someone that BOUGHT one of his guitars for a lot of money, he feels the need to soak him an extra $100??.. Why? because he had to put it in a bubble wrap envelope, and mail it??
I can't see the logic in this.. bob

I don't charge $250.00 for the knee lever kits. And after looking through all your comments Maybe you should not buy a knee lever kit. That may lower your blood pressure a little. Have a good Day.
