Just watched the Gene O Neil performance and "wow" what a presentation. His slow E9th is exceptional, especially "The Three Bells" and "Maidens Prayer". The man stood alone in the world of Steel Guitar. I have never heard anyone do anything like he did in "Funky Monkey"???? I know he played with Charlie Pride but would like to know a little more about this "Guy". I recall he left us at a relatively early age...what was the cause? Information please. This is one to really check out. Thanks Bill, I am a fan and you do bring much listening pleasure.

Roy, Gene went into the hospital for a tonsillectomy as I understand it, and suffered a stroke due to a mistake in surgery. He passed away a few months later, I think.
I was fortunate to have seen him at the St. Louis conventions several times. Fabulous player, good sense of humor with songs like Funkey Monkey and My Monkey Died This Morning.
Here is one thread about the man. You can search on his name here for more: https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=113999&highlight=gene+oneal |

I just finished listening to Gene and once again I'm floored. What an incredible talent. I attended this show in 93 and being able to relive this is all the more great. Bill, once again you provided an invaluable service to the steel community. Thanks for all your efforts. I really appreciate it. |
