Bought a '69 Twin locally some time ago. Like so many on this Forum have said - they do sound great for steel. Everything in the amp section worked and the speakers sounded good but one was the original Fender and the other a Celestion.
The first problem was weight and the second problem was the cab had structural integrity problems (due to the first problem) plus this is a 50 year old combo amp. In addition, the baffle Fender used at this time appears to be a wood product.
So, Rick Johnson built a set of cabs that solved all the problems and that look fabulous. These cabs will be here in another 50 years as will the amp. When I got the cabs from Rick I put in two new Eminence Lil' Texas speakers - higher sensitivity and just a much better speaker than what was in there. Sounds great.
Thank you Rick for an excellent job!!!

Thank you Chris! I am a proud papa and just glad there is someone like Rick who can give new life to an old amp like my Twin.

I had Rick do the same thing earlier this year Fred. I have JBL K-120s in my cab, and it is entirely manageable. It will also sound better with the birch ply baffle Rick put in there. The original in my '73 was made of some kind of composite chip board material - dead and heavy. Enjoy your twin!

Here are m,ine before I put the amp and spkrs in.

Cool Bobby! That is exactly what I have.
The Lil Texas speakers are neo so the speaker cab is freakishly light - feels like nothing is in it but doesn't sound that way.
The amp cab is still heavy but certainly not like the full combo amp was. I especially like being able to put the head right by me and have the speaker cab tilted back and sitting behind me.

Ditto on both accounts Fred. I was very surprised at how much the amp itself weighed - it's almost, if not, as heavy as the spkr cab loaded with JBLs

And that was my thought exactly on how I would use them. I had a 3' and 10' spkr cords made - 3' for home, 10' for stage. I like the idea of having the amp and it's controls at my fingertips - I think of Nightlife, where Buddy speeds up, and slows down the tremelo.

I have planned to split my Twin also, but I'm planning a wider cab. I plan to set it up like the traditional "piggy back" design, but just not as wide. Then I can still tilt it!

Rick made our spkr cabs slightly wider than the head. I talked to him about hardware that would lock the head to the spkr, but can't remember why we decided against it. I think he said it wasn't very secure. I'll have to have two stands to set it up on stage, but that's not really a big problem.

Be careful with your design Bill and I know Rick will help. I talked to him about doing that and he advised against it because it would be top heavy and unstable. Now that I have mine I see he is correct. Perhaps as you say with a larger speaker cab it will work. Please post pictures if you do a tilt back piggyback.

That's what it was he told me too Fredd, now tat you mention it. And, upon seeing how much the Twin head weighs on it's own, I can see he was absolutely right.

Here's a picture of one of my twins. This one started out in life as a Super 6 reverb, but when I got it, it was a burned up chassis. I rebuilt it and built this split cabinet. I like to experiment with two tone color combinations.

That black and brown looks nice! I've done black and blonde, but now thinking brown would be nice also!

Bill, I like your black an white combination also. I just recently built a customer a head only cabinet for his Lab amp and he wanted red and black. Looked very cool as well. Lots of options

Michael - I bet that Twin does sound awesome and probably weighs a ton, as in a ton of tone.
Steve and Bill - very cool color combos. Has any manufacturer ever done any two-tones like that?

I put a Peavey Bandit into a head/cab, and covered it with vertical red-white-blue, but am thinking for the Twin to cover the head red, and the cab white/blue.
