For those of you, fellow steel guitarists, who might be interested, Astral Spirits has released, on vinyl and CD, the album Invitation to a Dream, a trio album featuring free jazz legend Joe McPhee (soprano sax, pocket trumpet), Chicago legend (also) Ken Vandermark (tenor sax, clarinet), and yours truly on an old MSA pedal steel.
This session, recorded in September 2017 in Austin, Texas was the first time we had played together as a trio. Joe McPhee and I had played together off and on (mostly off) for over fifteen years, but it was the first time I met Ken Vandermark (in a car on the way to the session) - we had spoken few words before the recording of improvised music. As a trio, we've played together a few times since then, and it has always been magical; and that's how I think of this album.
