Forgive me if there is an ancient string about Ed Black and his great playing and influences on other players, but I searched around and couldn't find one. Back in 1979, Karla Bonoff toured promoting her new release, Restless Nights. Her band played at my college on that tour and for THREE DOLLARS with student ID, I got a ticket and sat right up front in front of the steel player. Not knowing much about individual players other than Buddy Emmons, Buddy Cage, John D Call and Dan Dougmore (who played on Karla's first album in 1977), I assumed the steel player was Dan, having never seen him. My recollection is that the steel guitarist was playing a black single neck Emmons and his playing literally put chills up and down my spine. It wasn't until 2009 that I saw Karla Bonoff again live when she played with her band in Woodstock, VT. I was a bit disappointed her band didn't include a steel player, but Kenny Edwards was playing bass and I got to talk with him after the show for a bit. I mentioned that 1979 show and said how impressed I was with the steel player, Dan Dugmore. Karla and Kenny at the same time both said that the steel player was Ed Black and yes, he was fabulous. Kenny expressed his sadness over Ed's untimely death, dying so young of cancer. It wasn't a year later that Kenny also passed away, a real blow to many of us who where fans of his and the bands he played in (Stone Poneys, Linda Ronstadt, Karla Bonoff, etc.). For fans of Ed Black, there are live soundboard recordings on Wolfgangs Vault of Linda Ronstadt and her band live where Dan Dugmore AND Ed Black twin on pedal steel and if you put headphones on, Ed can be heard in one channel with Dan in the other. Really amazing stuff.
So, I am hoping folks who knew and possibly played with Ed, have some stories to provide to this string. There is unfortunately very little information on the web about this fine player. Steve Fishell has posted elsewhere some stories of his friendship and times spent with Ed, maybe some other Forum members have anecdotes and stories? _________________ John Brabant

Hi Everybody,
Ed was a really good friend and player. This afternoon he is being inducted into the Arizona Country Hall of Fame. Wish he was still here. |

What?? No way. Over the last week this kind of stuff has now happened twice where I think of a steel player and he is being discussed or (now) recognized! Maybe the name of this string should be changed Danny and Jim. Is there somewhere I can find out more about his induction? _________________ John Brabant

Glad to see my old pal Ed getting this recognition. As he's one of the originators of west coast country rock steel, it's a well deserved honor.
Hat's off to Ed Black, and congrats to all the other awardees. |

A very talented guy, gone way too soon, and as nice a guy as you could ever meet. He also did remarkable leather work. |

I still have a strap Ed made for me. Many hours spent at his place in the hills getting an education both about music and how to be a genuine person. Those were the days. _________________ Life is mostly Attitude and Timing |
