It's an L-4N. We'll need more/better pics to determine the value, but the control pots through the top are not exactly helping. |

The back is a pretty light brown to gold burst....sides are darker mahogany brown.old style geared tuning keys.neck straight as an arrow with killer action. _________________ Franklin D10 /Walker Sterio Steel JBL's /DigiTech Quad4/ Korg Toneworks/ Dobro DM 1000 / Santa Cruz Guitar VA |

I would say the knobs on top cuts the value by at least a third. |

Some have stated the pick up on the L4 is a alteration ,hurting the guitar ect....not concerned it is not for sale..a keepsake....but I did find a L5 photo on historic Gibson site with the same pick up.diff knobs...leads me to think it might be factory ...any thoughts. or knowledge ?

Both pickups are DeArmond model 1000s, one of the most popular floating pickups for archtops in decades past. They were not available installed at the Gibson factory but many were added by players over the years. They could be purchased with attached controls, as seen on that L-5, or without. They were designed to be attached to the neck, bridge, and/or pickguard so that they didn't interfere with the vibration of the guitar's top. By mounting the controls to the top of the L-4, someone not only drilled extra holes but dampened the acoustic sound of the guitar. |

This is 100% correct. But if its a keep sake only and you're not concerned with resale value, know that you have a fine guitar with a very good pickup and you could gig with it and have a great sound and a great time. |
