All other things being equal (cost, venue, audience, etc.), who would you rather see? And why. |

That's what I was thinking when I voted for the Stones. Junior's great but he comes through town about every year.... Now, if frequency of appearance locally is one of the things we're supposed to hold equal, as well as ticket price, then it really comes down to whose music you enjoy more... and I'd pick Junior.
But anyway, isn't the real debate between Stones vs Beatles??

This.
Except for me it would be 50 years ago. I had every one of the Stones' first 12 or 15 albums, plus some bootlegs. But by the 1980's I had already traded rock for country. I still enjoy 60's rock occasionally but could not name you one song the Stones have done since the year 1990. They are the greatest rock and roll band ever, I just no longer am into them. _________________ Many play better than I do. Nobody has more fun. |

I thought The Stones were too old in 1975 when they came to Cleveland.
Definitely Junior. Saw him once before and would gladly take him over Mick & Keith at this point. |

Thanks everyone for participating. Interesting responses, all.
On this board, I would have thought the Browns would have surpassed the Stones by a wide margin.
The reason I posed the question in the first place is because I had the opportunity to see both here in Colorado this summer (for approximately the same cost), but could only afford to see one or the other. Neither act was on my bucket list, as I've seen both previously.

If they were touring the same amount and both were equally available to see, I would flip a coin. But they’re not, and I would go more out of my way to see the Stones, knowing that Junior is prolifically touring.
When the Stones played in Missoula, geez what was that, maybe 12 years ago, it was just plain amazing. Podunk Missoula. I was there with my best friend of many years, he and I have been through many adventures and mis-adventures together. The Stones started in Jumping Jack Flash, with iconic chords hammered out by Keith Richards, Mick dancing around like a wrinkled version of his younger self. I started tearing up, something deep in my misspent youth was bubbling up, my friend looked at me and laughed and yelled over the noise , “Are you crying!!??â€, and I wiped my cheek, laughed and yelled back, “They are playing the soundtrack of my ENTIRE FREAKING LIFE!â€. They were just fantastic.
A number of years later he and I and our wives went to see Merle Haggard in Butte Montana. This was after Merle had bounced back from throat cancer. Merle jumped into the opening song (you can guess which one), and I started tearing up, my friend looked at me and laughed and yelled, “SOUND TRACK OF YOUR LIFE!â€
But I do l really dig Junior. _________________ A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first. |

I saw the 1982 stadium show in Tempe AZ that was part of the "Let's Spend The Night Together" film. All due respect to the venerable headliners, but they were the second-best band on the bill. George Thorogood and the Destroyers pretty much lived up to their name and impressed me a lot more, even without all the stage theatrics, props, light show, literal honky-tonk women and extended 70-megaton "Mick and Keith have left the building" fireworks show. (Opening, Joe Ely, as I later found is typical, was Blue Cheer-loud.)
When concert tickets start invading the price range of durable goods, celebrity Bigsbys and most cars I've ever owned, I'm out. And I'd rather see Junior Brown, straight-up, even though he was here in May and returning next month. Junior has far more entertainment and virtuosity for me, at a fraction of the cost. _________________ "Gopher, Everett?" |

Agreed. Although in my case, the cheapest ticket for Junior Brown at Fir was roughly equivalent to a nosebleed seat for the Rollin' Stones at Mile High. But the Stones show did not offer a scenic mountain train ride, a box lunch, and the opportunity to spend a few minutes chatting with the headliners afterwards as part of the bargain.
I saw the original Stones playing a teen dance in one of their first shows during their original tour of this continent in June of 1964. I went with an older, hipper cousin. It was the summer between 6th and 7th grade. (I'm dating myself here -- clever readers can do the math.) The lily-white suburban t'weens in my neighborhood were unfamiliar with the Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Slim Harpo, Otis Redding, etc. covers they were playing. I thought they dressed funny and smelled bad, but I did enjoy their shtick and their music. Brian Jones was the first guy I ever saw who blew a Hohner into a mic, which must have had a subliminal effect on me, since doing likewise helped pay my bills for years. Little did I know, that over 55 years later... |

Stones here. Saw the Beatles, have not seen the Stones. It would make the 60's icon list complete considering most of the bands from back then are gone.
Quintessential Mods vs the Rockers!
The Stones did have a lot of hits, the Altamont/Brian Jones incidents notwithstanding. Too much magic and mystery wrapped up in this band and era. Most likely never to come again at this magnitude. Can't just look at the music, have to include the zeitgeist of the time they happened and bring that with you to the concert.
Psychologically people gravitate to the music of their youth.

I would've maybe liked to see the Stones, but probably not much later than '72. On the other hand, I paid about 415.00 to see Junior in the Double Door Inn (a small roadhouse in Charlotte) right after My Wife Thinks Your Dead came out ('92?) and he was a killer. |

I’m thinking that’s got to be a typo, Bobby. Or else there is much more to the story. I think I paid about $20 to see him in a Louisville club around 1998. |
