This video is a special one for me. First the player on the left is Roger Crawford. One of my best friends for more years than I can remember. Roger was a drummer in the band I was in. He fell in love with steel guitar and "says" I am the reason he took it up.
On the right, a kid of one of my business associates. Jonathan Cullifer was around 12 in this video. He is playing the first Carter Pedal Steel that Bud Carter built for me. Jonathan's dad, John, bought it from me the first show I played it on in Saluda, SC.
Now Stoney says Jonathan was one of my students. WRONG. I would take Jonathan to steel shows and to the VFW I worked in and set him up right beside me (and still do). He would watch and then play. He surpassed my playing in the first few years with a steel. Now living and picking in Nashville, TN (with a REAL day job). And I am proud to call him my "adopted" son that I never had.
So enjoy this early video of Roger and Jonathan in their early years of pedal steel.
