I was privileged to play bass on a job yesterday that Tommy Detamore was playing steel on. What wonderful, soulful, in tune steel player he is. I first met Tommy at the Opry when I worked with Connie Smith. He is a very talented player, record producer and engineer. Not only that he is a very nice man.If you ever get a chance to hear him play live do yourself a favor and go.

Johnny,

I've had the pleasure of knowing Tommy for the past several years but had never met him in person, until last February. My wife, Kathy and I were lucky enough to be able to meet Tommy and hear him play with Jake Hooker and The Outsiders in Kurten, TX (near College Station). They were performing at the enormous community center there. Gosh, what an awesome experience for us both! Tommy is a great player of course but is also very humble and friendly.

We were introduced to Jake and everyone in the band (all great players as well). Justin Trevino was also there as a guest singer and he was kind enough to do one of my favorite songs of his for us; "Teardrops Don't Lie".

We later saw Tommy again at the TSGA convention, where he was inducted into their Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to Tommy, for your very well deserved award and thanks so much for all you do for everyone you associate with.

Great post Johnny... Tommy is without a doubt one of my favorites... both as a musician and as a person, he’s one classy guy... he came and sat at my wife and I’s table while we were in Dallas last March and had a really nice visit with him and a little later Jody Cameron too, there’s another class act.

Tommy's playing on Doug Sahm's 'The Return of Wayne Douglas' is perfection. Awesome.

Could not agree more, Alan. An encyclopedia of hot steel licks and that Texas in-your-face honky tonk sound I love. Two thumbs up for Tommy D: a great player and a great friend.

Tommy Detamore is the coolest. He played one of my all time favorite solos behind Dallas Wayne on Eleven Roses. His tone and playing are just off the charts. He’s one of the nicest folks I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting and he never seems to mind when I tell him I have a crush on Rosie.

I’m hoping I’ll get to meet Mr. Detamore this coming Saturday nite if he plays with Jake Hooker in my huge metropolis home town of Old Glory Texas. I hope he’s not put off by the traffic jams and such.

Agreed! Cowboy Peyton Place was one of my first, and now all-time favorite pedal steel tunes. Tommy's playing was a primary influence for me taking up pedal steel in the first place, long before I knew who he was. I just loved that sound and had to get one of my own. I was really happy to meet Tommy in person in Dallas this spring, as nice a person as he is a great player.

I haven't gotten to hear you play live yet Tommy, but it's on my list, thanks for all the great music!

Tommy's playing has always been inspirational. If you're new around here or if you missed it the first time I'd be humbled if you would visit this post from 2007.

Great little story from back in 2007 Bill Miller. Yeah, Tommy Detamore sounds soooo good behind that steel.
