does the Black Box tube, if it fails, goes out completely, or can it kind of 'grey out'?

The reason I'm asking is last night at a little bar gig, my rig was acting up. I turned the tone control on the BB up, and it fixed the volume issue.

But it seems like my tone was off. I haven't tested/eliminated the other parts of the signal chain yet.

Just wanted to find out if there's a chance that the tube was maybe going down. . . .
