I'd like to build an extension cabinet to use with the Milkman The AMP.
It doesn't seem to hard but built ones are not cheap, just wondering what I'm missing.
Are there any good resources for this? |

Paul, you might check local craigslist or marketplace for a cheap combo amp. Trash the amp and speaker and put your speaker in it. I see off brand amps in the $20 to $50 range. How do you like your Milkman combo? I have one on order.

curious as to what a biscuit is? no gravy, tho?
i've heard of people buying bee hive boxes and turning them into extension cabs. apparently very cheap and made of pine. if i can find the link, i'll add it.

Look around online. You can usually find one already built cheaper than you can build one yourself. These are available in 12's and 15's.
Some of these are carpet covered. If you don't like the carpet, you can strip it and pick up some tolex to redo it and still come out ahead. Tubesandmore, parts-express has tolex and your local Hobby Lobby has it also for about $15 for a yard. Plenty to do one or maybe two cabinets.
All that hardware, corners, jacks, dishes, handles etc. adds up faster than you might think. Good quality birch plywood is not cheap either.
I've built quite a few cabinets of different styles, so I have some experience with costs. |

I build them as needed , sized to fit a specific need. I recently built a couple of 1 x 12 cabs and a 1 x 15 CAB. For overall dimensions I look up available RETAIL cabs and go with those.
A sharp pencil, a sharp saw blade, 5/8 or 3/4 plywood, some wood screws, some glue , some tolex, some grill cloth, some corners, feet , a handle and a speaker ! Oh yeah, a carpenters square, don't forget that !
Then I add a Badge
Actually, now that I think about it, its not about the speaker cabinet at all, but rather an excuse to use as many power and air tools as possible !

I've built 3 speaker cabinets and a combo cabinet. It's not about saving money as you can buy an empty cabinet pretty cheap. Search ebay for 'guitar speaker cabinet empty' and you'll see some. It's more about creating something that's exactly what you want. And also the fun of building it if you're into that sort of thing.
For my cabinets I purchased all the hardware, tolex and grill cloth from mojotone.com.
I didn't do any special calculations on sizing. I just built them to fit the speakers I wanted to use and also looked at the specs for some name brand cabinets. All of mine sound great IMO. |

| Michael, the biscuits actually join the woods together. The tool cuts a groove half the size of the biscuit in each side of the woods, and adds to the surface area that is being glued. I haven't had any joint fail yet! |

Exactly the same for me. I have built 3 cabs , one of which I use on every gig, a small 1 x 1 2 extension. Others I use "if I feel like it" based on which amp head I may be using. Not all gigs are equal and not all have the same available footprint space.
I'm getting ready to build yet another, a 2 x 10 cab to match the Z head , I've got the speakers, I've got the tools, I've got the time, all I need is the red tolex and the wood ! Heck I've had 4 Emmi P10R clones for a few years just sitting around , time to use 2 of them ! Time for a 2 x 10 head to sit under the 38 Z.

I bought a Standel Artist that was insanely heavy so I built this head and speaker cab for it. It turned out not too shabby in spite of my low level carpentry skills.

I made this one for a Quilter Steelaire rack mount with some mahogany I had left over from another project. I used a dovetail jig which makes easy work of it. By the time you get a good speaker (I used a Telonics TSNEO 12 4) and misc parts, you're up into the mid $200's. The commercially available ones don't seem so expensive in light of that. I think it sounds better than my Steelaire combo and I'm thinking about building a 2 12.
