Topic: okay to remove P.P. endplate? |

| I need to replace a couple of lower rods on my C neck that I removed a while ago, they run the entire length of the guitar, can I remove the keyhead end plate or is it best to pull out all of the C 6th rods and fish them in old school? |

I would opt for the fishing method.
You may need to lift some of the E9 cross-shafts just enough to feed the rod without causing a permanent bend.
you can slide on the required hardware as you feed. (collars, spring, spacers, and swivels)
I usually reconnect the swivels to the cranks after the rod is installed.
It would have been nice if they'd been designed with a 1/8" hole in the endplate.

Removing the end plate is not necessary and I have done many.

Steve, you can absolutely remove the endplate to do that. It does make it easier. You just have to loosen all strings before doing so because there is (on a D10) two screws through the endplate which hold the keyhead down.

I've done both methods. Removing the endplate made it a very simple process to feed the lower rods through, especially if they have to pass through a guide bell crank swivel. I respect Mike Scaggs' ability to install the rods without removing the endplate, and he could probably do it in his sleep. However, for us mere mortals, the endplate removal is the easier option.
