I'm hoping some readers might have played on various generations of Gibson steels and have a good sense of the pros and cons of various pickups.

I have a 1940 Kalamazoo on hold - it's a transitional model with a crinkle finish but with the U-magnet pickup that was installed in the earlier Kalamazoo steels (and that also succeeded the Charlie Christian unit in late 30's Gibson-branded steels). I believe the U-magnet pickup is also in the first Grand Console models (with a bobbin that looks like the Charlie Christian unit) and also in the later EH-150. I think that by 1940 the ES-100, 125 and the KEH and MEH models had moved on to the silver Alnico without polepieces.

Any thoughts on how the U-magnet pickup compares to the CC pickup, or to the later oval "racetrack" units or the P-90? Thanks.
