just wondering how many steel players play in a 3 piece band steel, bass drums.i have seen David wright on youtube play in a 3 piece band great playing. i am thinking of going that route since i can't fine a guitar player. let's here from you....

My three pieces usually consist of rhythm guitar, bass and myself on steel.
I know what you're saying, it's hard to find a good rhythm guitar player anymore.

| Did it for almost 9 years, same gig, different players over the years. Everyone has to really be on their toes for fills and how to get the maximum sound. I had really a GREAT singer for about 7 of those years and that'll make a big difference. |

For maybe 6 months, played a 2 night a week club gig with a bass and drums. We had a female singer that didn't play an instrument. I guess that would technically be a 4 piece band, but it still had the same 3 piece instrumentation.

I've been invited to form a band with an excellent girl singer, bass and drums, also excellent. Rhythm guitar would be nice but as Erv says, they don't seem to exist. Daunting, but I'll give it a go and report back.

Erv, I know a great guitar player in Rochester, I don't know if that's close but I know he'd like to be busier.

He knew the basics when we first got together but now he is very proficient with chords.

Played many times with just steel, bass, and drums, and you really have to maximize your sound. When you don't have a rhythm or lead guitar, covering even the simplest songs (stuff like "I Walk The Line", "My Heart Skips A Beat", or "Young Love"), requires more than just pads and call-and-answer fill crap. You gotta do it all, and do it reasonably like the record to pull it off.
This type of gig kinda shoots in the ass the theory that "less is more".  |

Doesn't need a steel guitar, either. The three "example songs" in my post were all #1 country hits - all had drums, but no steel.
We're steel players, so we like steel in country songs. Record producers, even those in Nashville, have no such affliction.  |

I was in a band a few years back, all original Americana w/bluegrass/traditional country flavoring... It was Steel, Fiddle,acoustic rhythm guitar, and miked upright acoustic bass.. Very good band, nice following, decent money, all original music, nice venues..NEVER missed the drums, or electric guitar at all.. I would NOT like a band with Bass/Drums/Steel.. Not enough interplay for my taste .. BORING!

| The tittle of this thread is "3 Piece Band??". I hope I`m not off topic. For an April 27th gig, bass player friend Elaine Ellis was putting together a band for a local venue where she plays bass and freelances with several bands. When she asked me who to get for lead guitar. I suggested Roger Trahan for TWO steels. She said no. We did it, had a ton of fun/repeat bookings and more to come. |

90% of the time I play without another chordal instrument, but usually play with a Quartet, fretless bass,, drums, steel, and trombone
I refer to it as “3 slidey things and one bangy thingâ€.. I’ve so far been unsuccessful in talking the drummer into using roto toms...

The last 20 years just me (Ext E9) and Bass (6-string)..we both sing...(don’t miss a drummer)...occasionally a Sax guy...lots of Jazz, reggae, ballads and rockin stuff..nobody in our way.. in another country band, me, guitar and bass, we all sing...25 years..we added Stu when he lived in Alaska..Larry

| Many many moons ago I did some gigs with a guy & his drum machine. It actually went pretty well. We'd have the whole place up dancing. As I remember his drummer ran on batteries and would start dragging after a while. That was way back when they partied hard so I don't think the crowd noticed. |
