I've been on a bit of a Santo and Johnny kick lately...which matches really well with the lineup of my group right now (just me and an archtop/jazz rhythm guitarist).

I discovered this tune this week, a cover of a doowop tune by the Heartbeats. Man, it's got everything...you can tell they packed it with a lot of the "Sleep Walk" influence.

I've worked it out mostly on my new Clinesmith and am loving playing along with it. Santo obviously did a few overdubs to get the "bass" and "tenor" parts (you can hear sometimes they sustain into the main line, so it wasn't one take). I'm trying to simplify things a bit with a single arrangement. If I can get it down and record a vid with my guitar player I'll try to post it. Makes a nice demo for the Clinesmith pan, too!

But the end of the chorus when he hits that sharp 9 on the G7, and goes into that higher, sweet melody on the last verse, that's just great playing and melodic feel...I'm pretty stoic of a player but I can't help but throw a bit of stank-face on there Razz . In Hawaiian music, I'm a Jules man through and through, but Santo Farina's single note playing on jazz and popular tunes...it just oozes emotion, I love it!

Nice tune. Thanks for the post. First time I heard it too.
Plastic finger picks? I've never met anyone who used those.
Wonder what that would be like, but really like my Nationals.

I started out using plastic picks but didn't take long to switch to metal. Very Happy

Here's another song that REALLY reminds me of Sleepwalk - Home by the Ventures. First I'm a huge Ventures fan so maybe I'm reading a bit too much into this, but the first Ventures album came out several months after Sleepwalk was released. This song is similar to Sleepwalk, but the Ventures also covered Sleepwalk and there are other similarities on the albums as well. All in all I think they were much inspired by the Duo!

I couldn't find the music for "A Thousand Miles Away" but I did find it for "Daddy's Home".
The same song only with different lyrics.
This resulted in a lawsuit between the two publishers. Very Happy

I did record a pretty lofi demo version of this tune earlier this year:

Would like to have recorded a version with my guitarist, like I mentioned, but he moved to Mississippi so now he's (not quite) A Thousand Miles Away too! Smile

Very nice Nic. Andy, Sebastian uses plastic pics on every one of the videos he posted. (I think) I thought they sounded really nice. I bought some and could not handle them.

I tabbed this song out over the weekend but it sure doesn't sound like the Santo and Johnny version. Rolling Eyes

I wonder how this song lays out in the C#m7 tuning Santo used on Sleep Walk and Tear Drop?
