Hardly recognize him without the hat!
I saw him in concert several years ago...kind of a strange thing because the steel guitar bug hadn't bit me yet, and I've never been into country music per se, but I could tell, something special about this guy!
That's great steel playing...obviously his style isn't Hawaiian in general but he does the vamps and chimes... And his fretted guitar work is always impressive. You can tell he's put in the requisite work in the woodshed over the years...an easy confidence in his playing.

I can really hear a lot of Buddy Charleton influence in his playing here.
I fell in love with Junior's voice first when I bought the Ry Cooder soundtrack to "Trespass". A version of "Party Lights" was on it and I loved it. "Guit With It" had just been released and it pretty much blew my mind. Then I saw him on ACL and not long after that he rolled into town with his bus. Saw him numerous times after that and later played some shows with him. Love the dude.

The only other player who is kind of in his universe is the late Danny Gatton. Both of them seem to have wholly assimilated entire genres and signature sounds and techniques from famous as well as more obscure players.
In Jr's steel playing I can hear Jerry Byrd, Red Rhodes, Herb Remington and an endless number of pedal and non-pedal players. I don't know Charlton's playing very well but I'll take your word for it, Mike. On guitar, I hear Roy Nichols, Hendrix, James Burton, the Ventures, Dick Dale, Jimmy Bryant and on and on. The guy's a virtuoso of electric string music of the non-distortion school of playing.

amazing player, particularly when you see him live and can really see what he is doing.

Another one of Harry Owens' great songs. But like Mike says, Juniors voice is fabulous. I love his baritone with the Beach Boys. Oh yeah, and the steel isn't too shabby either:

Yeah, Tanya Rae Brown. Kinda efficient, I tried cajoling my wife into learning ukulele for similar practical purposes (nothing doing )

This guy has the best teaching style I've found and his web site has the tab and a ton more Junior Brown riffs for a per song fee or $25/month for the whole site.
Check out the riff at 3:00 (2:46 at speed with track) in this lesson. Looks at how well it is presented and with optional implementation. |
