I'm having a hard time getting a BL 705 low enough in a Mullen G2. I've removed the spacers to make it playable- are people removing the mounting plate as well? Am I missing something?

+1 on Mike! I have a 705 in mine, and there's plenty of adjustment. That said, I had an older reissue that I tried to get into an Emmons, and there was no way it was going in. Made me wonder if the newer and older 705's were different heights..
I have one on my new G2, and one on my LDG (both new RI's), and I can get both of them at least 3/16" under the strings. Both of mine measure 7/8" (.875) overall height..dunno if this helps, but measure the overall height of the one you have..

I always remove the original spacers and replace them with spacers of less thickness, just enough for the pickup wire to clear the underside of the pickup.I also replace the pickup mounting screws with shorter ones so they wont bottom out and prevent the pickup from lowering, which may be what is happening. I have done this on a few G2's and have always been able to lower the pickup into the sweet spot. Best of luck.
