Here's my take on the surf guitar classic, Pipeline. I think the tuning would be called Em11. I devised the tuning specifically for this song. The hardest part of this one was making the backing track. Thanks for checking it out.

Thanks all! I've been stuck in a surf guitar groove lately and I like it there! Cool

I like your surf guitar groove! I listen to your Apache often. I met Dick Dale a few years ago and considered trying Miserlou on dobro....that would be a project! Great job, love your playing Doug.

Thanks Greg! I've been thinking about Miserlou as well. I'd have to use a flat pick on that one! There are a lot of one minute Instagram videos of people playing the tune on different instruments. Here's my favorite: https://www.instagram.com/p/BvJeOpRhiGj/

Great job, Doug. Very interesting how you came up with a custom tuning to play it.

I'm curious if that tuning would also work for the Pyramids classic tune Penetration. It reminds me of an inverted take on Pipeline, but I'm not sure. I'll post it in case you wanted to try:

I arranged Miserlou in A6th for my book of surf instrumentals. Works great and yeah - a flatpack is essential! Smile Thanks for helping keep surf music alive, Doug; I love your version of Endless Summer.

Thanks Scott. I recorded Penetration a couple of years ago —-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1WTjvf8hG8

I created a unique tuning for that one as well. Same thing with The Endless Summer. I just turn the tuning keys until I find a convenient tuning for the song I want to play.

Thanks Andy. As you once said, lap steel guitar is particularly well suited for surf music! 🤠

Excellent. I've always liked the way you work open strings into the licks you play.

Couple questions:

Is your background arrangement all 'man made' or partly machine?

Are the black pickups on your steel an after market item you can purchase?

Yes, I like using the open strings, especially for hammer ons and pull offs.
The backing track... I start with Band in a Box... for bass and drums only. I make a wav file of bass and drums and import it to my recording program. Then I add several tracks of guitar... chords, fills. Sometimes I add ukulele if the song needs it. This track was especially difficult to make. I spent way more time on the track than the steel. The steel was the easiest part!

The pickups on my Deluxe 8 are original to the guitar. I think it’s a 1967.

Here’s my chain for recording the steel: Guitar—> Black Box —> Peavey Nashville 112 amp LINE OUT —> Holy Grail Plus reverb—> into computer, Audacity software. No volume pedal on this one. So I don’t record the amp’s speaker sound. It’s a direct recording.

That was great Doug, thank you for sharing!

Can you write out the tuning that you are referring to as possibly Em11?

Thanks, here's the tuning, which I believe is Em11:

G
E
D
B
A
F#
D
B

I was coming from C6 w/high G, and looking for an easy way to get the notes for Pipeline that included some open strings. I tuned strings 3 through 8 up a whole step each! They were mighty tight. I would not recommend this tuning as a usable all-round tuning. I just came up with it to play this specific song.

I missed that one! Wouldn't you know it. I'm a big surf music fan and it's tempting to make some song recs to you, but you are doing great already!

I'm curious to know... how many of you listen to YouTube videos on your Phones, on iPads, or on a computer?

I'm wondering because I usually mix the audio in such a way that sounds best on an iPhone. My thinking is that most people watch videos on small devices. Problem is... a good iPhone mix can sound different, usually more "bassy", on a pair of speakers.
