I have an old seat that could use new foam. Read on an old thread that CW Edgar and Joe Naylor recommend #140 foam. I know you can't buy this off the shelf at a retailer. Anyone know where to order it?

Thanks!

Found this site on a search. Looks like they will sell pieces cut to size (but expensive). I know nothing about the site other than I found it doing a search for "#140 foam".

I made a seat and regret using a soft thick foam. I sit down and I sink a couple inches. I'm guessing synthetic horse hair or some higher density stuff is better. I'm not sure how foam is rated (obviously).

Dan - you might consider using Confor foam. I used 1" of green firm topped with 1" of blue medium and it came out perfect for me. If it was good enough for our Apollo astronauts it should be good enough for me.

I made the mistake of repacking my seat with WalMart foam. 30 seconds later, It's like sitting on a board.

I'm going to re-foam my seat "again." Upon reading about foam density, I'm leaning toward 1.8 density @ 44lbs compression. Is 44 too firm?
Would several layers of quality carpet padding work well and last a long time?

Dennis, I don't know for sure but I would go extra firm. I thought they offered a 2.5. It seems like the rating system is not clear. I had my couch redone and they put a really firm foam with little give if any. We love it. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.

I found some on ebay rated 1.8 density and 55lb compression which I think is extra firm. 1 X 24 X 82.
$22.00. It's being shipped.

I had excellent results with my second try. 1.8 and 55lbs compression. Months later, the seat is holding it's form and comfortable.

Some years ago I ordered a Steelers Choice seat. In talking with Joe Naylor, the maker, about it he mentioned he uses the same foam that is used in the seats of long distance aircraft. Those pilots have to sit for many, many hours.

Steelers Choice is made by Dan Rollins
SteelSeat is/was made by Joe Naylor ... Still trying to track down what Joe actually used

I ordered high density foam rubber on ebay 3 years ago and rebuilt my seat. It's still holding original shape. No butt pocket developed like the old foam rubber.
