OzSGA Spring Review 3/16/2019
The weekend started great...the weather was not to bad, Cool but sunny. Preparations began Friday with Buddy setting up the sound system and vendors getting their tables ready for the show. Looks like a great time ahead. Stone Castle has renovated the complete hotel and it looks great! I think everyone was very pleased with the new look. Thanks Stone Castle Hotel & Conv. Center and all your wonderful staff, the great venue, and the coffee, water and extras you offer..
First player of the day was Bob Harris from Iowa, who plays lap steel and is a wonderful picker (Richard Vogt was ill and couldn't make it). Next was local player David Dean White, who plays both pedal & lap steel and does a fabulous job on either one! Cathy Smeenk sang and David Bennett played keyboards.
Jerry Smythe from Arkansas followed next and is a terrific player. The crowd loves him! So glad Jerry brought David Bennett, Jim Roland and Larry Combs with him. What a great band!
Clovis Richards from Oklahoma is always welcome in Branson and plays great...George Geisser sang as did BJ Richards who played bass .
The crowd loves our next picker! Larry Gerdeman from Hannibal, Mo who is a fantastic picker.... I'm sure Larry will be back again sometime !
Next to grace the stage was the incomparable Mike McGee of Dadeville, Mo. Mike is a great player of various instruments, teacher, producer and mentor. Doug Cole of Oklahoma SGA sang with Mike as did George Geisser.
The "lovable" Eddie Lane from Branson, Mo. closed out Sat morning with his smooth touch on the steel! Eddie has played steel for two shows on "Hwy 76" in Branson from 1979 to 1990!
We then took a short lunch break....
Local player, Dean Holman, who plays steel and Dobro for the Presley's here in Branson was the first player of the afternoon. The crowd loves to listen to Dean play both instruments!
Next was Keith Hilton with Billy Martin Jr, on drums. Ernie Jackson and Frank Warmbaugh sang,
The colorful Jimmy Dreadful from Oklahoma wears a full Indian headdress when he plays steel and his cousin, Jess French, accompanies him on bass and vocals. Great job guys....
Bob Tuttle from Mo played next. Bob once played steel for the late, great Ray Price, among others!
Bob was followed by Lee Ogle of Oklahoma who always plays beautifully...Perry Ogle was on vocals and Doug Cole --= on vocals and bass.Eddie Lane was on lead as George Geisser had to leave.
After Lee we enjoyed the soon to be steel super picker, young Jacob King accompanied by Dan McMasters on bass. Jacob is a protegee of Mike McGee. His Dad Jason and brother Josh King were here and sang with Jacob.
Closing out the first day were legends Terry Bethel and Lynn Owsley of Nashville, TN and special guest legend Junior Brown and his wife Tanya Brown on rhythm and vocals. The set was full of great picking on both solos and triple steels. Lynn and Junior sang a few songs and told some jokes. Great closing guys!!!!
Sunday always starts off with a wonderful church service This year Leroy New presented us with a heartwarming service. Leroy performs locally in a tribute to Marty Robbins at the Dutton Family Theater.
The steel music continued with Mike Squires, our Vice President and he does a great job in both areas. Mike is a pretty good singer too.
Larry Garrett is a wonderful player and good country singer. Everyone looks forward to Larry playing every year! So good to see Larry...Smile
Rick Eaves from Kansas plays beautifully. This time he brought a young man who played standup bass and was an awesome singer and sideman, Dustin Terry. Hope we see y'all again.
Terry Wood and his 14 yr old son, Zane on bass are from Marshfield, Mo where Terry was an art teacher. Terry is a fantastic player. Zane is becoming quite good on bass guitar....
Greg Moody was unable to make the show! So Lynn Owsley filled in much to the delight of the crowd. Thanks Lynn for helping out!
Everyone took a short lunch break and started the jam session. There were 8 steel players: Lynn Owsley, Rick Eaves, Eddie Lane, Terry Bethel, Steve Melchi, Mike Squires, Terry Canada, and David Dean White. The band stayed the same with some extra players: Bob Holt on fiddle, Greg Klien on bass, David Young on Vocals & rhythm guitar, Bob Wedell on vocals and rhythm, Cathy Smeenk on vocals, Dave Perryman on vocals and rhythm, and Marlyse Stockinger on lap steel and vocals.
Thanks to Buddy Lewis for the sound system
Our band consisted of George Giesser on lead and occasionally fiddle, Russ Burns on drums and Buddy Lewis on bass, Saturday we had the pleasure of David Bennett on keyboards all day. Some players brought their own pickers with them. They are noted in the comments for each player. Thanks everyone who also sang for various players including our Secretary, Cathy Smeenk, Buddy Lewis, Russ Burns, George Giesser, Junior & Tanya Brown, Jason & Josh King, Doug Cole, Marlyse Stockinger, Charlie Steichen, Mike Squires, Larry Garrett, Jim Roland, BJ Richards, and Ernie Jackson, Frank Warmbaugh, Jess French, Perry Ogle, Lynn Owsley,Rick Eaves, Dustin Terry, Bob Wedell, Dave Perryman, David Young, and Eddie Lane for singing and playing lead when George had to leave and emceeing on Saturday...
