I can't remember the numbers, but I use the Emmons setting because I also use a Hilton pedal and the Emmons setting is more like my Hilton than the Hilton setting.
Great to have all the choices, though.

Another vote for #6. Like Dale, I too like the AB sound,plus the added sustain that comes with it being a Unity gain taper.

#4 - Emmons pedal with AB type-J pot. - My personal favourite - Prefer my volume pedal to have unity gain when fully on and like the feel of this taper on the foot.
#2 - Goodrich pedal, green LED model - Unity gain and nice on the foot, sometimes preferred to #4 when recording.
#7 - The same as #4 with added gain extending the taper curve.
#6 - The Telonics taper - a visualisation of what is required for the ‘perfect’ foot controlled taper. As I recall, has a little added gain. |

Yes another one for the #6 setting - this I believe is modelled on the old Allen Bradley pot taper - perfect for me and have used it for a long time now.

Mine is set to #4. Don't know why. I don't have a strong preference. The differences seem pretty subtle to me, and they all work fine.

Paddy - Missed catching up with you in Dallas - Hope you and yours are all okay... a shocking attack.... madness....
#4 is the old Allen Bradley taper. I’m trying to recall a conversation, probably 8 years ago now, I had with Dave regarding #6. As I recall, Dave said he was looking at the graphs of all the tapers and thinking about improving the ability of a taper to sustain a note or chord. He sketched out what is now taper #6 and asked his programmer to code it. Recall he was very keen to get it out to players.

The Telonics FP-100 info can now be found on the main https://www.telonics.com website.
At the bottom of the home page there’s a link to the Pro Audio section.
Then select the FP-100 Multi-Taper Volume Pedal section.
At the bottom of the text describing the FP-100 pedal you’ll see a blue link “Support Sectionâ€. Click on that.
Under the Support page you’ll see the blue FP-100 title and under that a Software title. Just under the Software title you’ll see a link “FP-100 Toolbox Softwareâ€. Follow that link and you’ll be able to download and install the software used to update and configure FP-100 pedals.
You’ll need a programming lead, that’s available from Telonics if you don’t have one.
After installing the software you’ll need to contact Telonics by email to obtain an authorisation code - there’s no charge for the code.
The Toolbox software is supplied with all the latest tapers. |

Ha ha Ian... yep that rig does the job! So clean and warm sounding as well.
#5 - The older Hilton (with attached PSU) taper. First electronic pedal steel VP I owned. I agree Ken, that taper works well. |

I still have my Hilton pedal Mark as a backup in the unlikely event that I get a problem with the FP-100. The Hilton is still a great pedal, but I am not a fan of 2 great big wall warts - one 240v to 110v transformer, and the standard early 24v transformer. After many years of using a Hilton, going straight onto my Telonics VP with the same taper made it a very transparent changeover. I also use the Type J Allen Bradley setting (taper #4) on my Emmons push pull and Sho~Bud guitars.

I hear you about wall warts, and the fact that the Telonics is 24v complicates the issue. I have 2 of the power supplies - one on my effects board and the other in my seat - but I still worry about that "single point of failure".
I'm going to try switching to #6 just because so many of you are using it.

For me, the Telonics pedal simplifies the issue. I run a lead from the front of my TCA500 combo amp into my pedal. The output socket is 24v.

Good idea Ken ... Since I use the Midi controller designed by Mark, to control my EFX unit, it also has the added feature of supplying the 24V to the volume pedal - so since I have the Midi controller attached to the right rear leg of the guitar, it only requires a fairly short lead to power the VP - I do carry both options in my seat though in case I forget something hehe ...
