What are the actual notes of your D9 tuning? |

The one I've been taught is similar, basically a rootless D9 (CEF#ACE). Even easier to retune from C6...you just flat the G a half step. But yours has the root instead of another 9th down low, very nice! _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

Yeah, I love the 9th chord tunings. It's hard to beat those rich 9th and 7th chord sounds! And the m6 is pretty sweet too. I don't think 9th tunings aren't the best all-round tunings, but for certain songs they are outstanding. |
That's why I think they make a great "second neck tuning" on a console. At least for me and the way I play...C6/C13 is what I can play most stuff on, but then sometimes B11 (which I consider more of a 9th tuning, the way it is used...A6 on top, B9 on bottom, which sure, can go all the way to 11th, but that is rarely used) is just the right tuning for a song. It would be hard for me to justify a second neck on D9 though since it is so close to C6...an easy retune.
Here's a D9 tune I recorded a week or two after learning it from my teacher in Kailua (first and only trip to HI) last year. Rough in spots but shows off some great chords in the tuning:

One of the prettiest tunes I've heard in D9th is Jerry Byrd's"Shadow Waltz". Hi to Lo E-C-A-F#-E-C

I've been woodshedding on D9 tuning lately and I'm really enjoying it. Here's a quick video I made a few days ago. I had to speed up the video by 10% to make it fit Instagram's one minute limit. |
This sound great! |

Yes, that's the "rootless" D9 tuning that Nic mentioned above. John Ely refers to it as Drop-string C6. |
Probably explains why I was taught that version...my teacher is Alan Akaka, whose teacher was Jerry Byrd...I've gotten a few hand-me-downs from Mr. JB! _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling
