I was amazed to discover recently that all the guitar music by Granados and Albéniz that we're used to hearing is arranged. They were pianists and never wrote for guitar at all!

You're right Ian. Sor, I believe was a guitar player, Villa Lobos was a guitar player, but most of the stuff we hear has been transposed for guitar - a whole lot of it by Segovia. My teacher was a student of Segovia's, and taught me that method.

Yup Mike, My teacher had me on that one for a time, but you can't imagine how hard it is to do that kind of tremelo, or how long it takes to get it down. He started me off with flamenco pieces that seemed to all have tremelo in them. I could have learned all the other techniques in classical/flamenco guitar in one tenth the time it takes to master that - so I did, and steered clear of tremelo... I was too ADD for that kind of concentrated effort. If you listen to the Leyenda, it has a similar effect, but is leagues easier than that. I can't imagine how you are going to accomplish that on steel.

A note on miss Ana's tremelo: She is wonderful, and has it sounding very right, but I was taught to do it differently: starting with the 3rd finger (A) then the Middle (M) and then the first (I). She is doing it with I and M. Interesting. I don't think Segovia would've stood for such a breech. His method was very demanding. If you watch John Williams do it after her, you'll see the method I described - although, I think her version was a little more passionate.

This leads me back to the OP: I read your article, and it made me remember that classical guitar notation has letters (T-I-M-A) over the top, and every note is numbered according to which finger is used. I'm sure if it skips up the neck to a differing position it notes that too, but I don't remember how. Maybe you could come up with some sort of system like that for pedal steel.

I don't even try. I just play the melody, most of the time with 1 or 2 strings underneath it. It's al;most a different piece.
