The publishing companies are hooked to ASCAP or BMI. ASCAP and BMI collect the royalties for songs and distribute the royalties where they need to go. But you raise a good question. I do believe that they come into play for recorded media too. How else do the recipients of royalties get their money.

It was mentioned that Buddy was paid royalties by Ron Jr. Paying royalties like that, I would believe that Buddy would lose any rights to further royalties off the sale of the recordings. I have done all my recording sessions where I got a flat fee, and no royalties. Even had some tunes that got airplay on radio stations.
