With all of the various non-pedal tunings, I was wondering what the average highest note we tune to is. I'm thinking C6th with a high G is probably the most common, or maybe a high G# on an E13th.

Of all the tunings you play, what is the highest note you tune to? (pedals don't count)

I voted "E" as I don't use any tunings with higher pitches on the first string.

I did try a Cajun tuning once that had a high G but I didn't like it so it's back to an E on top.

Using a high G on both C13 and Cajun G.

Not crazy about the tone, but for C6 or C13 it is so handy for jazz tunes, and the high G is essential for Cajun.

"D" for me. When I first got into 8 string lap steel I went with regular Western Swing A6 tuning, but sitting in on a lot of swingy blues in the key of A led me to drop it down a tone to G6 for some big, fat dominant 7/9 passing chords. Never looked back, so...

D
B
G
E
D
B
G
E or F

Plus it's the same as my 8 string reso, so it suits my lazy streak. Smile

By the way, mine is F#. The tuning is D6th:

F#
D
B
A
F#
D
B
G

This is also the middle 8 strings of my pedal steel tuning, which includes a high E and a low D.

Sorry, b0b, I didn't realize when I answered the poll that this was pertaining just to non-pedal steel. Please delete one G# from your tally.

I was wondering where the F#'s came from in the poll.

That would be an interesting tuning, you could play Rudi Wairata and Feets Rogers stuff on it.

To me, it's just like a C6th but higher so that it cuts through the mix better. The low note G is like the F on a pedal steel C6th.

I voted E because I was thinking "6-string lap steel". But lately I've been playing a lot of 8-string C6, and my high string on that is G.

Bobby Ingano uses the high G on the C6th tuning. I've tried it a few times, but it wasn't good for me...

David Knutson, I have an 8 string Dobro that came with a G6 tuning on it. I was interested in the E13 tuning and I found that I could change the G6 tuning to the same E13 tuning that Noel Boggs and Jules Ah See used without having to changing any string more than a whole step. The tuning is E,G#,B,D,F#,G#,C#,E. Check it out, its a cool tuning.

Similarly, my D6/G tuning simply slacks 2 strings on a dobro: G B D F# A D.

Iรขโ‚ฌโ„ขve been thinking of trying that tuning on my 7 string, D G B D F# A D

For the time being though, Iรขโ‚ฌโ„ขm keeping things real simple, open D.
DADF#AD on the sixes,
and
D F# A D F# A D on the seven. I wasnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt able to click with the G6 tunings.

It might be worthwhile to try this 7-string D6/G tuning:
G B D F# A D F#

You might find a hi F# is more useful than that lo D on your New Yorker.

I think that's what gave the unique sound to his playing with Hank Williams.
Before Don Helms, I never heard of a high top string like that. Very Happy
