I am rebuilding an older MCI (Pre welded frame) ...and the leg sockets appear to be a smaller size than the standard we see on most modern guitars ! Does anyone know where I might acquire a set of 4 leg plugs in the smaller size used on the earlier MCI's ?? - I already have a spare set of legs thanks...

That's odd. I just screwed a set of legs from an Emmons push pull into an EMCI frame. Fit like a glove. Most modern steels seem to be Emmons/Sho-Bud size sockets and threads. I thought the endplates on MCI and EMCI were the same but maybe not. I know ZB legs have bigger threads but my 3 EMCI'S will take all modern legs.

Hi Dave... I have a 86 MCI Rangexpander but the legs from that don't fit this older MCI .... it is a pre-welded frame variety - not quite like the Chalker MCI flavour, sort of inbetween - but the leg sockets are smaller than the standard size on every other guitar I own !! Quite perplexing to say the least.

I see. I guess Gene Fields had a different idea than Bud when he built the original. I had the old plexiglass original that Bud built for a while but never tried any other legs on it. Bud might have got a deal on them so he used a non-standatd size. I wish I had kept that guitar. Mine was a D-10 and light as a feather and sounded killer with the chrome wrapped 705's in it.

No sir paddy you are imagining things. These guitars where built this way until they made The move to Arlington and started wielding the frames AXA and building the rangexpanders

I think the Waco model wiifh Lexan laminate had the 3/8” threads. Could you have some 1/2” lugs turned down and re-threaded? I believe the 50’s Gibson Console used 3/8” legs.

Sorry I don’t. I would probably look into turning 1/2” lugs on a lathe and threading them. I have lugs and can turn them but I don’t have a thread cutting lathe.

I don't know for sure that the threads were originally 3/8", but about 10 years ago I built a guitar using some new,old stock, MCI endplates. The existing leg threads were 7/16-14. I drilled them out and re-threaded them to 1/2-13, which is the common size found on most guitars. That's only a 1/16" difference. I was careful and managed to get everything straight. I'm guessing that your guitar probably has the 7/16-14 threads.

Not only are theh a bit smaler but also have a small shamfer at the base of the plug. People dont pay attention to this and use square base legs and end up stripping the leg sockets out on the end plates.
