I found a few threads on repairing broken tuners, but none on preventing a break. Anyway, I have a couple tuning pegs that are pretty stiff. Would you recommend pulling the pan and greasing the gear? Or using oil? |

After 60 or so years there is likely a dirt buildup that causes friction on metal to metal parts. It is probably wise to clean them and lube them with grease after all these years. Since they are still working now if you want to buy some time and do it later you could squirt some silicone into them and work it in. Oil might attract more dirt. Either way if you use oil or silicone be sure to keep it away from the wood by wrapping a rag around the tuners. _________________ Time flies like an eagle

On open gears like that, I've always used the white lithium grease, never had a problem.

Grease and oil are usually what screw tuners up over time. Both attract dirt, dust and hair. They also break down over time.
For years I've been cleaning old tuners (mostly with naphtha and a stiff short bristle brush - then I lube them only with dry Teflon lube - not the oil type.
They stay clean and only need to be re-lubed every 6 months or so. _________________ No chops, but great tone

Yeah, I'm more of a 'every 6 years' kinda guy. I have some dry lube--maybe I'll use it. I figured the way the tuner pans are constructed would do a decent job of keeping dirt away from the grease. Does the dry lube not last very long? |
