Does anyone know which BW Peavey replaced the JBL with in the Session 400? 1501-4 or the ribbed cone bass speaker 1502-4? Maybe a better question is which was the FIRST model Black Widow. Thanks

I replaced the blown JBL in my '77 LTD 400 with a used (and presumably well-broken in) 1501-4 from a more recent Nashville 400. I know this may sound like sacrilege to many, but I much prefer the sound of the BW to the factory JBL.

I know that the speaker in the LTD400 was switched to a 1501-4....so since the LTD400 is a "compact " version of the Session 400 I would guess the 1501-4 was used as well.

Thanks Mike, yes that would make sense. I knew the 1502 was in the first NV 400s, and was curious if they were in the sessions as well. Maybe the 1501 was first and the 1502 was developed with the NV 400? Speculation of course.

If I'm not mistaken the only other Peavey amp to have a 1502-4 from the factory besides the Nashville 400 was the Vegas 400....

BTW Geoff....saw you at Floore's Country Store on 9/21/18 with Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis...you guys opened for Robert Earl Keen.....loved the tone of your push pull and your playing!!

Hey Geoff, I've got an old Session 400 that has one of the first version Black Widow speakers in it, sometimes called the Spider Web version because of the web logo on the magnet. This Session 400 is a first year, so it would have originally been shipped with the Peavey labeled JBL, and no doubt that was replaced at some point.

I was working at a Peavey dealer when the Session 400 came out, and we stacked up those blown JBLs like cord wood. They just weren't designed to handle that much power. I seem to remember that situation as one of the reasons that drove Hartley to design and build his own speakers.

I don't remember exactly when they transitioned from the JBL to the BWs, but I'm pretty sure at least some Session 400's went out with that Spider version.

I believe that they have the same power-handling capability as the newer super-structure BWs, but I sort of prefer the way the spider-web sounds. Maybe leans a bit more toward the JBL sound. The bad news is that they don't make replacement baskets for those any more (as far as I know), so if it's blown, it goes in the trash. LOL

If you want to borrow it and see it you like it, give me a shout, I trust ya.. Smile If you like it, I'd bet you can find one, they're out there. I stole this pic from one sold here on the forum earlier this year.

Hey Bill, thanks for that info. I didn’t think about those spider web speakers sounding different. Very interesting. Lets get together like we’ve been threatening and compare side by side!

Here is an article that I Hartley and I put together for a short history of the steel amplifier that we have been involved in. Thought that this might provide insight.

Thats a great read, thank you Mike B. I didn’t realize there were a few different incarnations of the 1501. Very interesting. Bill T. lets make that happen friend!
