Fellow forumites interested in Hot Jazz from the 20’s and 30s,

Registration is live for the Red Hot Strings Workshop in Port Townsend, WA (May 15-19, 2019). The workshop is the brainchild of one of my favorite musicians, guitarist Matt Munisteri, and I'm thrilled and humbled to be joining the crew as the steel guitar instructor. Acoustic non-pedal playing will be the focus of the course, but electric players are equally welcome. In other words, no need to buy a 20's or 30's tricone just for the course!

If this workshop is of interest to you, please see below for details and spread the word if you know someone who might like to enroll. It should be a lot of fun and a good hang!

Cheers,

Mikiya

Who? Enthusiasts of Hot Jazz and Swing music of the 20’s and 30’s who want to absorb the styles of early Hawaiian and Western Swing steel players and want to develop their ensemble playing skills.

What? Red Hot Strings is a five day workshop in beautiful Port Townsend, WA celebrating the “Jazz Age” string players – a long line of musicians birthed in ragtime and blues and unleashed in the popular music of the 1920s and ’30s.

The 2019 workshop will include classes in guitar, violin, mandolin, tenor banjo, bass, and one dedicated to the steel guitar with a focus on the styles of players such as Sol Hoʻopiʻi, Sol. K. Bright, Sam Ku West, Dick McIntire, Andy Iona, David Keli’i, Bob Dunn, Noel Boggs, and Joaquin Murphey (sincere apologies to all the legends in steel guitar heaven who I’ve failed to mention—you know who you are!).

The instruction will center around learning and performing specific tunes (and tunings) from favorite recordings of the Hot Jazz era. Participants will meet in small group and individual sessions where we’ll try to make sense of the music—both from a technical and artistic standpoint. Students will also perform in ensembles coached by pairs of instructors, so you’ll have opportunities to engage and jam with other instrumentalists on the faculty.

A note about tunings: given that we'll be closely studying steel players like Sol Hoʻopiʻi and Bob Dunn, the “High Bass A” tuning (A C# E A C# E) will be central to the instruction. However, we’ll certainly explore 6th and 13th tunings as they’re vital to so much great Hawaiian and Western Swing music from the 40's on.

Instructors include guitarists Matt Munisteri (Artistic Director) & Albanie Falletta; violinist George Washingmachine; mandolinist Dennis Lichtman; bassist Matt Weiner, tenor banjoist Tyler Jackson (also former bassist for Ray Price!!!), and steel guitarist Mikiya Matsuda (yours truly).

Sign up for a course in any of the above instruments, but bonus points if you take the steel guitar course Smile

Space is limited to 60 students, so sign up today! For more info and to register: http://centrum.org/vintage-jazz-workshop/
