Hello Pedal Steel friends.
I wanted to share a series of videos I'm starting.
Full band recordings with just a single mic.
Most of the ones we're putting out have pedal steel in them,
I thought you all might like to hear some steel recording this way.

have a good day!

WOW!
Super clear and clean, well mixed, if “mixed†is even the right word. Great performance by the singers, excellent arrangement, great playing. That is one Bitchen mic! |

Very cool... !
How much experimentation before you got everybody 'in the right place'?
I've had some pretty good luck with live recordings (in a club/venue) with a single Zoom H4 (stereo mics).. but it's usually hit or miss, you don't know what you have until after the fact. |

Excellent in every way! Thanks for sharing! Erv that mic looks like an AEA R88 stereo ribbon mic to me. |

At that price it's a good thing you only need one.

Hey Drew. Sounds beautiful!! Thanks for sharing.
Was this experiment possibly inspired by John Cunniberti's one mic recording experiments in 2016 for Tape OP magazine?...or maybe the other way around?
We had the pleasure of being his "guinea pig", and once he had a basic formula he did a series of other bands in other studios using that technique and hiring a professional video crew.
I think he even went to some well known studios like Mussel Shoals.
On our trial run we did two two songs in one day. Half the day was spent getting the levels and instrument placement. I played steel out a a tweed Fender Champ placed on a barstool. I believe he used the same microphone that you used that you used in your recording.
I really love this approach and works real well if it's a band with dynamics that is used to playing with each other.
Here's his playlist of the OneMic Series:

thanks all for listening!
Bill. the process usually does like this.
We'll have a singer come in and we'll fine tune the arrangement. Figure out who's tasking solos, how to end the song, tight up harmonies etc..
While that process is doing on which takes about 30-45 min the engineer comes out and moves us around and tells people when their playing too loud etc...
then when he's ready we roll some takes until it feels good. 1 song usually takes between 1-2 hours total. Very fun to record this way! |

Got into a discussion with a pal recently about one mic recordings, and remembered this thread. This is about as good as it gets if you ask me.
No auto-tune, no punches, no comped tracks; just talent. Kudos to Drew and the band... again.
EDITED: ... Kudos to the engineer as well, this takes some good ears. |
