My favorite steel player blows it out! I can't buy the album.... I slip into a deep depression! This is not for the faint of heart! Enjoy and Happy Holidays to all you mere mortals!

Why is it that some guys just seem to "have it" whatever that is. Yes practice 24 hrs a day has a lot to do with it, or practice in the dark, but they seem to hear things differently and are able to translate to their hands quite effortlessly. Makes me real jealous. Some of them have natural abilities that the rest of us mere mortals do not have. My Hero's hear things my mind just does not comprehend.
Thanks for your responses.

I'm prompted to suggest that 95% of what you're hearing is the result of literally countless hours of physical dedication to the craft.

I imagine that Paul got a sound grasp of good fundamentals very early on. Then he put in the hours, building his technique and opening his ears to all music and learning from it. That's how he's reached the point where his imagination seems to have no bounds.

I contend that the majority of us have the ability to 'hear' intervals almost without trying but that has to be developed a thousand-fold to where chords can be instantly analysed and phrases jump from the brain to the hands. No one is born with that. Don't give up too quickly!

So much to learn and so little time.

Thanks for the insight Roger,
After 40+ years sitting behind these monsters, I am too far along to give up now. It is a mystery to me though. I love this instrument, sometimes it doesn't love me too much though. However, if it was easy, everyone would do it! Very Happy
