I’d love it if somebody can point me in the direction of some great albums that feature steel guitar in non traditional settings.....

For example, I love the Redneck Jazz Explosion records, as well as Flying Burrito Bros, etc....

I’d love to hear some improvisation as well...

Apple Music or Spotify links would be amazing, but I’ll take whatever recommendations I can get!

Greg Leisz pops up in a lot of non-traditional settings, everything from Bill Frisell albums, to Beck, to Meshell Ndegeocello, to Daft Punk. Check out Bill Frisell's Good Dog Happy Man album or Guitar In the Space Age.

Also, check out Burrito Bros steel player Sneaky Pete on Stevie Wonder's "Too Shy to Say".

Also, check out Buddy Emmons with Ray Charles on the song "Feel So Bad" or the album "The Complete Country and Western".

Check out Susan Alcorn for some very non-traditional and very beautiful playing.

Alvino Rey had some interesting stuff that featured steel guitar in a big band setting. I've heard some interesting use of lap steels with palm pedals lately. That seems to be something a lot of non country groups and musicians are making use of. Steel guitar is certainly making its way to other genres (some of it I like and others, well not so much) But its still cool to hear it in different settings.

I heard some steel on a live version of Tiny Dancer by Elton John today. Was on his Diamond album.

Charley, I don't know if you saw any of this thread from a few years back, but you ought to be able to find any number of non-traditional uses of pedal steel:

Check out Bruce Kaphan's CD's for some very cool non-trad steeling.
His "Pelican Dreams" CD is awesome.

Paul Niehaus recorded some great stuff with Calexico over the years. Surf meets spaghetti western.
