Thanks guys. Maybe I'll start by marking it with some nail polish and see how difficult it is to keep that rotated away from the strings. I'm a bit concerned that my hand will cover so much of the bar that I won't see the mark until it's too late. But I can always try.

if that fails, I may just have to spring for a new bar.

How about a thin strip of tape, like pin-striping tape for autos, running the length of the bar over the boo-boo?
