I tried these thumb picks and really like them but I could use a smaller size (skinny thumbs!). Looks like these only come in medium. any suggestions for a similar smaller size pick ? thanks !

If you can find them at a store (to try them for size), the yellow delrin 'regular' sized Fred Kelly's (not the slick picks) are pretty small. But mail-order, it's a crap shoot whether their idea of medium/regular/large lines up with yours. I need more, myself, but can't remember which size I got......Elderly now only seems to have large and everyone else is only selling 24-packs.

Karen,

I have some blue Hercos that are way too small for me. I don't know if they are the size model you are looking for, but if you PM me your address, I'll mail you a couple.

Thanks for the responses, I think they only come in one size.

All that I've found are only one size. I went through one vendor's entire stock at St Louis one year looking for one that would fit and they were all too big for me. You can't resize them like plastic picks.

I’ve found the Fred Kelley to be same shape as the blue Hercos but in a variety of sizes and thickness. They are color coded, but none are well marked as to their size and weight. I have a orange one and a bag of whites ones that seem similar.
I recommmend buying a bunch online and trying them out . Its a very reasonable investment in your playing.

Karen, have you tried heating up the pick and reforming it to fit better?

The Herco's are nylon, not plastic like most thumb picks and can't be reformed. I've tried putting them in a cup of hot water and they won't reform. Scotty's Music, at the St Louis ISGC told me that they can't be reformed either. As I previously mentioned I went through the entire stock of a vendor (it was Scotty's) trying to find one that would fit.

The problem I had with Herco is that if you do find one that fits, it loosens up as it warms up. But that's me.

Lots of players I see keep a couple or 3 on their steels and they switch between them, I guess.

But they are super popular, so many steelers must find them terrific.

I've taken to polycarbonates and just reshape the wide blade to suit me. Dunlop's reg black or white stock, or more recently the newer line of stiffer Ultex.

Fred Kelly's for me. I found that wide bladed picks tend to get hung under a string now and then but never with the Fred Kelly speed picks.

I don't like the wide ones either Dick. What I do with the big Dunlops is file them down and re-shape them in hot water like this. It takes a little time, but it's worth it to me.

I also file down the ring which hasn't yet been done in the photo.

I don't like the Hercos because they never feel secure and spin around on my thumb. Neither to they have the snap of polycarbs or the Ultex.

Check with Elderly instruments for the blue Herco pick. Can't remember about sizes but I buy them there a dozen at a time and they fit perfectly. I thought they were a Fred Kelly pick.

Elderly only shows one size, which is the issue with them only being one size, so it goes back to they fit or don't fit.

I tried the Fred Kelly picks an they're too large for me too. They slip around only slightly less than the Hercos. The closest that I've found are the white Dunop SMALL thumbpicks. They're not quite as "twangy" as the Hercos, but they so stay tight on my smallish thumb.

Reading a banjo hangout and he claims hot water and pressure will shape the pick. I know several here said no. Mine fits good so I'm lucky.

Have you looked at what Frenchy offers, Karen?
Might not be quite what you're after, but if you haven't seen this, it may help.
