I'm new to PSG and play a GFI D10 (standard, the way it came).

Eventually I may want to add/change some things.

Can folks do this themselves or should it be left to the pros?

Just thinking of trying some things (eventually) and sending the heavy thing, being without the horn, etc., is an issue. Anyone do this themselves?

Thanks

The first thing I did on my first pedal steel was change the copedent. It was pretty easy on a Sho-Bud 6139, though.

ItÒ€ℒs pretty easy to work on a GFI as well.

The more experience you have messing around underneath a pedal steel guitar, the more you start to appreciate subtle stuff that makes a difference in its fine tuning.

But in my opinion, the very fact that you are considering doing this indicates that you have the basic mechanical confidence to go ahead and do it. A lot of things are relatively simple. The forum is here to help bail you out of predicaments.

The simple answer is that yes, it is common and reasonable to do your own changes once you have an understanding of how the pulls work.
Take photos and make notes & charts of which bellcrank and changer holes are being used before you change anything. It will help if you restore things to their original setup (and can help inform you when you choose which holes to use with the new setup.)

It's a little harder to add knee levers because of figuring where to place it. It helps if the guitar is pre-machined for additional pedals and levers. Changing setups is easy on a GFI. You usually don't need additional parts for an E9 setup if each pedal and lever has 2 changes on it. Just requires moving bellcranks and pullrods.

Thanks all,

So if y'all do it, I'm mechanically inclined and will try it. As long as I can get the matching parts.

V lever to start. Probably years away. I have to "master" what I have first

When you decide to do something, pick up the phone and talk to the folks at GFI. Really helpful.

I would strongly recommend getting the Pedal Steel Maintenance video from Mickey Adams. There are aspects of this that are not exactly intuitive - like adjusting the pedal/lever range along with the pull geometry to get the exact pull you want. It does a pretty good job of explaining all of it.

I would take pictures & record things by way of pen & paper, before I got too far along, just as a precaution.
