I think the critical thing to sounding "legit" is to not move a pedal or a knee lever while a string is sounding.

Play the parts on the open C6th or with pedals down on the E9th for the A6th sound......Tonally play it this way.....Pick the strings one octave away from the bar position at all times....That picking position will give you a real old sound....Shouldn't have to change your normal tone much...I would stay away from any outboard gear and very little, to no reverb....

I just recorded on this 12 year old kid, Mason Ramsey's sessions doing old Hank Sr songs....This is exactly what I did to please the producer and since some steelers have heard the sessions I have been asked what console steel was used.....This is a very convincing way to get around buying a lap steel.
