Very nice, Rose! I'll be listening to your version multiple times to steal ideas.
I started working on this tune last winter while my civil engineer daughter was on a tough field assignment installing micro-piles in a cold, damp parking garage in Amarillo. On night shift. I doubt she appreciated the connection. |

Very nicely done! Can anyone point me to history of this tune or early recordings? I saw one listed by Bob Wills on Youtube but the recording sounded obviously (more) modern.

More modern than late 1956, when Billy Bowman recorded it with the Wills band?
I'm guessing that's what you heard as I don't think Wills made another attempt at the song.
The late Weldon Allard does a great vocal on the version below from circa 1980, but I can't find out if he wrote the lyrics just for his version or if Billy Bowman conceived the song as a vocal and wrote both the lyrics and the music in the 1950s, but just chose to record it as an instrumental with the Wills band for unknown reasons.
For the life of me, I can't understand why apparently no other band has ever recorded the song as a vocal with these bluesy lyrics.

Allard was a song writer, bass player, and vocalist for years in Amarillo from the late 1940s on and recorded both under his own name and as part of steeler Billy Briggs' band. So I am wondering if he was singing the song as a vocal in the early 50s with the Briggs band when Wills/Bowman heard it and appropriated it. Wouldn't be the first time that happened, but it's just speculation.
It was also done by Jim Reeves' Blue Boys as an instrumental on a transcription. Guessing that would be Bobby Garrett, but I haven't listened lately.
Also done more recently as a duet by Herb Remington and Cindy Cashdollar.

Well I'm not sure what it was about the recording (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=husfJPu2xPk) that made me assume it was a mislabeled modern recording. Felt a bit cleaner than I expected in audio quality, maybe. But you're right it looks like, Billy Bowman with Bob Wills, late 50s.
I have much to learn with Western Swing, that's for sure...thanks for the info!
