when setting the pedal rods at the bell crank,do you leave a little play in there,or do you set it to pull right away?or is this up to the individual?

Assuming a modern all-pull guitar, you must leave a litle play. This assures that the changer returns all the way to its full stop when the pedal is up rather than having the string 'suspended' on the nylon tuning nut when at rest.
