Hello, I want to change the GFI lll pic up on the E9 neck, (GFI EXPO) looking for something a little hotter and fatter sounding. Any thoughts??
Thank you.

Thanks Danny, could you elaborate on the Alumitone just a bit, what is your experience with it. Ever use the Bill Lawrance 705? thank you.

I find nothing wrong with the GFI pickup (actually they are a custom George L's) on my wife's S-10 GFI Expo. I've used it to record several times, used it on a job when I had my Franklin changer tore apart for cleaning and, to me it sounds good. I have Lawrence 710's on my Franklin so I'm sort of bias but the GFI does a good job. I've used the GFI with a GK MB200 amp, a Carvin BX500 amp and now my new Quilter Steelaire (all with a 15" Eminence EPS-15C speaker).

I'm the opposite with the Alumitone, based on what I hear on a friend's steel.

I have a GFI Expo S-10 3+4, purchased new in 2010.

I like the guitar a lot, but wanted more string separation/clarity on the low end than what I heard (just my individual/subjective experience) from the stock pickup.

Since I live in Minneapolis (home of Williams Guitars; I own one of theirs also) I took my GFI out to Williams' master builder Bill Rudolph and swapped out the GFI stock pickup for an Alumitone, and like the sound much better.

I do sometimes wonder about the "placebo effect" in such endeavors. "I want a different sound, I spend the time/money/effort on an 'intervention', now I like the result"...

Anyway, the Alumitone fit (I do remember Bill telling me "just barely, but it fit") and I like it much better. Good luck.
