Susan, I’m not a fan of the improv music, but that’s not your fault it’s just not my thing. You are very talented and I think you had a YouTube of you playing live conventional music with a band where you were just cuttin up & having a good time. Would you mind putting that link back up & any others you might have of you playing country or maybe even jazz?

Danny, Thanks for writing. I don't think I'm much of a country or jazz musician, though I really like both kinds of music and have endless admiration for those who play it well. There are only a few videos where I'm playing country music, and these are the only ones I know of, and the first two aren't really "country" per se, but I was having fun.

All three of the videos are from gigs where I was just sitting in with bands for the night:

Sun Goes Down in Harlem with the Bumper Jacksons

Trouble in Mind with the Bumper Jacksons - on this one I stand up to play the solo, which is kind of corny, also fun in a way. One time, years ago, I did that on a raised stage, leaned the steel over a little too far, and as my life passed before my eyes, the steel went tumbling down head first onto the dance floor three feet below. The steel survived, and I finished the gig - gotta hand it to those old MSA's.

Workin' Man Blues with the Severn Run Band

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HtTMzoggPQ

Oh, and this one too:

Nothing earth-shattering, but I hope you like the videos.

I think the phrases and musical choices you make in these songs show that whether or not you consider yourself much of a Country or Jazz player: You have an extensive knowledge of the vocabulary for these styles, and the mastery of your instrument to glue it all together.

I heard some Lloyd Green and Vance Terry in there. So Cool. I'm a fan of the improv music, but it's really nice to hear what you have to say in these settings too.

My heart would stop if I 'Jerry Lee'd' a Steel off of the stage. What a fun story.

Thanks for sharing!

Susan,

Thanks for posting these - impressive to see that you can do it all! I have always liked your view on the instrument and taking it to a different edge. Remember very well your playing at Scotty's Convention where I had a front row seat to watch and hear you play. This was a memorable experience for me! You are a musician, in the real sense of the term!

Kind Regards, Walter

It's a great credit to Susan that she can play in any style she wants, but chooses not to get stuck in a rut. That shows talent. Cool

To do something that hasn’t been done before, maybe it’s a good idea to be able to do what has been done before first. Susan, you have removed all doubt for me.

Good request, Danny. And thank you for responding, Susan.

The Whiskey Bent & Hell Bound is the one I liked. She got really close to the signature licks and played some good Honkey Tonk Steel. Traded off with the others and played some soft pads to fill out the small band. Neat lady.

Susan, your more 'conventional' playing sounds great. I wish I could play like that.

I love your improvised work. I saw you play with Joe McPhee at Cropped Out a few years back. It was one of the best performances I've ever seen!
