| I continually swap between my Dobro (G tuning) and steel when playing. For years I used the conventional C6 tuning on my lap steel. Every time I changed instruments my PEA BRAIN would get confused with the positions..... So.. about 8 years ago I changed my steel tuning to a G6th... and havent looked back. Reading a previous article on the Forum C6th and various configerations are used by many players. I am just finishing up a 10 string and of course Im sticking with my G6th tuning. Question..... are there any of you pickers playing the G6th tuning????????? Thanks Lee |

| P.S. I do confess .... that I have another lap I built that I keep the C6th tuning on....Just in case I run across something interesting done in C6th. Then I of course adapt it to my G6th tuning.... Like some of the great material that Roy Thomson has produced in his courses. Lee |

Me too. My main 8 string steel and my 8 string reso both live in G6 (or 13 with the low E raised to F). I like the lower chord voice options for G and A, and especially the "open position" blues scale availability for blues in E. I love a good growl.

| Hi all.... On the 10 string job I'm building... I've been giving it a lot of thought on how I want to string it. From the 2nd sting thru the 9th will be the standard G6 (D B G E D G B E) For the first sting ????? may be and F to give me a dominate 7th on top. For the 10th string....WHO KNOWS.... aint this fun??? Lee p.s Roy I sure miss your postings on the forum.... |

Nice to hear I am not the only oddball here. I play an 8 string G6, played 6 string in various tunings for a long time, finally settled on G because of 30 years of playing armpit guitar, I can navigate between frets without thinking. Eventually needed ability to play more chords so went to the 8 string G6, low to high is:

Here's the GM6/C7 tuning on my Ric B7, Hi to Lo:
G, D, B, G, E, C, Bb
This tuning has a good overall range and puts the 1, 4 & 5 chords in a 2 fret slot with familiar intervals & a bass G7 chord at the 7th fret. Other re-tuning variations are possible on the top string & bottom 2 strings. Some players don't like the sound of a Hi G string, but I think it works on this guitar. |

I don't use G6, but besides playing resonator in Ge tuning my main pedal steel is tuned to a 8+2 B6. Many other 8-string Fender players use the same tuning.
