Sacred Steel Music & History Month Honors...
Teacher Felton W. Williams Jr.
We Celebrate All Month!!
Felton began playing lap steel and guitar in 1944, after being fascinated by hearing Harvey Jones and Fred Neal play at the Mt. Clemens Church of the Living God.
Felton became a mentor to many young aspiring musicians in the church and used the basement of his home to sharpen their skills. He influenced other great musicians such as Eston Sonny Treadway, Ronnie P. Hall, Henry Wayne White, Ned W. Mayes Jr., and Calvin Cooke just to name a few.Under the name of Double- U- Sound, Felton designed and built his own brand of lap steel guitars as a way to accommodate the fast growing number of steel players in the Jewell Dominion churches. These lap steel guitars were economical and available in eight and ten stringed models.During the 2009 Sacred Strings Showcase concert in Toledo, Ohio, Felton was presented with the legends award. In 2010, he was inducted into the Sacred Strings Hall of Fame. In 2013, Felton was honored posthumously by the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. Felton Washington Williams Jr. passed away in his home March 11, 2012 and was laid to rest in the Detroit Memorial Park West Cemetery. Click link below...
