this is going to be a gorgeous vintage ZUM, restored, set up, and adjusted ... and again Henry is the man with the magic hands to do the job 😊...

Always great to see a steel brought back to life! what happened to the pickups on it?

Looks like someone just pulled the top plate off them. Bad move. They can be re-wound easily; they can even be tapped while doing it to give you a bright tone/dark tone option via a mini switch. RP

this guitar will have a brand new Alumitone pickups, and it needs a bunch of other work done as well, nevertheless, it is going to be an awesome instrument, once it gets done... I’m sure Henry will post some pictures as time allows....

beautiful thick cabinet, no cracks or any damage, it will be reflocked in black 😊

Old and damaged front mica will be replaced with new one ... this vintage 1979 ZUM is going to be a awesome steel once it gets done 😊

Watching this one Damir. I have an '81 which I will do maybe next year. It is a little heavy to play but I just dislike the mica colour most of all. I've even considered giving it a new custom made body with a spectacular timber finish but unsure about this. Keep the pix coming.

I believe the changer mounting has been drilled for splits. Note the row of holes bottom of last photo.

The end of the neck could be milled out so that split screws can be added and used.

That changer looks just like the ones I had. I was surprised to see that had been done when I pulled off the necks.

Jerry, this one does have the neck milled out for splits. Looks to be original too. Probably an option Bruce offered in 1979.

Wow a lot of work, but looks like its being done well. I could be wrong or maybe its a typo, but are you sure its a 79 model? I thought the front apron plate and slotted changer fingers came later. Please keep us posted as this fun project moves along.

Was going by serial which is 109974
Found a Zum serial number chart on forum and last two numbers, 74, are sequential numbers which looks like a 79.

Parts are all clean and I’m waiting on flocking now. Yes, a lot of work and I just work on it when I can.

Looks great Henry, and I'm sure it will honk. FWIW that serial number indicates it was built as a 10 pedal 9 knee guitar, built in 2006. I'm not sure when the conversion was made from center pull to side pull models.

Regards and best!

It was originally 10 strings per neck with 9 pedals and 9 knee levers, 1979 guitar per Bruce... we decided to go with most attractive set up which is 8+5 ...

Mine was late 81. It had the same changers and had the wrap around necks. I had intended to work the changer for splits, but when I pulled off the neck I found that it was already drilled and tap. I didn't know, couldn't see that because of the wrap around necks.

All I had to do was mill out the ends of the necks and install the screws.

Wonder how many more are out there that owners don't know are already worked like that?

Sorry for the sidetrack Damir and Henry. It's looking great and I'm sure someone will be thrilled to own it.

These old Zums are terrific.

Waiting on flocking. Got it ready for new black flocking. The pink in the holes is rolled up card stock to keep flocking glue out. Just makes it easier for me anyway.
