You can now get high-quality D'Addario DIY cables from the Steel Guitar Forum Store. These are the ones that you cut to the right length and screw on the plugs (no soldering).
The cable itself is low capacitance 22 gauge oxygen-free copper with a 95% braided shield. I've been using them since they arrived last month. The sound is transparent and the cable lies flat on stage. I even wired up my effects pedal board with them.
One nice feature is the circuit breaker plug. This is great for switching instruments on stage. You press a button on the plug to silence it. Available as a straight or right angle plug.

Are the cable and tips interchangeable with "that other brand?" |

No. The D'Addario cables are thicker and heavier than the George L's and Bill Lawrence cables, so the plugs are not interchangeable. _________________ -πππ- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

These are great cables, easy to assemble, solid, and very quiet.
(And now with the "circuit breaker" plug, they have now eliminated the only advantage I had with the ones I made myself with Canare cable and Neutriks connectors.)

In your description of these cables b0b it sounds like they are comparable to a George L.
Are they just as clean and transparent sounding as the George L cables? |

They sound the same to me, but I'm 69 years old. If you want a real comparison of the high end, ask a teenager if they can tell the difference.
I prefer these because they're thicker, they lay flat, and they're easier to assemble. I can't hear any difference between D'Addario, George L's or Bill Lawrence cables. Low capacitance all, with good shielding. _________________ -πππ- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Just received my cable and connector ends, and other miscellaneous stuff from the Steel Guitar Store. Super fast shipping! I just have to find my tape player for the Zane Beck and Jernigan tapes! The Cable is "made in the USA" it says on the box-cool beans. Time to make a cable. Thanks b0b! _________________ Derby SD10, Peavey Session 400 |

Yes. Yes they are.
Actually, I'm joining the (large) club of people who've just plain had it with George L right angles. Fine for me on a pedalboard but not for lots of plugging & unplugging. This looks like a huge improvement, skipping the awkward bending of the cable. Look forward to using these. |

b0b, I ran into difficulties trying to order D'Addario cable, I need decoder ring or other magic.
I wanted a 20 foot cable plus a 3 foot cable, but was told 20 was the limit, so added that to an order. Then tried to separately order a 3 footer. Was told 20 is the limit, sounds like per order?
Not an ideal or smooth interface, can you straighten that out (or me), please?? _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION

I learned that d'addario makes a "Latching" version of the circuit breaking plugs for a couple of bucks more. I guess they prevent you from removing the plug unless you have the button pressed. Has anyone had experience with those? _________________ All Twangs Considered. |

The Latching version stays shorted while the cable is unplugged. The user does not need to hold down the Button while changing instruments. I did a search for some Latching style plugs this Fall and turned up none. I believe that they are no longer in production. If anyone does find a source, I would be interested in knowing about it.
FWIW, I have always soldered up cables in the traditional manner. These cables from b0b are my first foray into Solderless Cables. The cable and ends are both first class and the finished unit is quite professional.

The PN's for the latching plugs are: PW-AGP-2 (straight) & PW-AGRAP-2 (right angle).
I believe they're still making and selling them. I just found this description that explains their function on amazon:
"The circuit breaker plug designed for use with DIY cable station custom cable kits. The latching mute button stays down until you press again to release the mute and make the signal live again. The perfect solution for pop-free instrument changes. The D'Addario DIY cable station allows musicians to make their own custom-length instrument cable without the hassle and inconvenience of soldering. The cables are made by pushing the D'Addario plugs firmly onto the cable and tightening a screw on the side of the plug. cable is marked every Foot for quick and precise measuring. A variety of plug styles enable virtually limitless options: pedalboards, effects racks, DJ cases, studio applications, etc." _________________ All Twangs Considered. |

I like the two cords I made a lot. The only thing I would change is that the plug is slick and stubby. With winter dry hands, I'd love for the hardware to be knurled for a better grip (I got the right angles and the short straights). |
