| Which set up Day or Emmons is best for You,an please tell the pros an cons of your choice. Myself I love the Day set up. |

| I prefer day set up I tried emmons when I first got my steel but my foot wouldn't move like I wanted it to so my teacher swapped it over to day I've been at ease ever since |

| My first guitar had the Day setup. I tried it for a while, and like Paul, my foot moving the other way was more comfortable. Combine that with the majority of players using the Emmons setup and being easier to sit in on another player's guitar made the switch a no brainier for me. |

My first steel was set up 'Day' and I knew less than nothing anyway! I quickly discovered, though, that rolling on and off the 3rd pedal with the 2nd pedal depressed was physically easier for me than rolling off the 1st.
I'm glad I stayed with 'Day' (even if Buddy was my hero!)

| With many years experience building guitars with every imaginable setup I found it easy to adjust when not locked into a particular setup. I learned on the Emmons setup and now when working on guitars with a Day setup I find it a little easier to turn my ankle using the Emmons. I do not think there is one better than another, whatever is comfortable. |

When I was looking into pedal steel for the 1st time, I got next to Little Jimmy Dickens steel man and he gave me the address and phone number for Sho~Bud.
This was the days of the Fingertip model.
He said "give Shot a call and tell him you want it set up Emmons style".
I did, and have been playing that way ever since.

Started on Emmons. About a year or so, I wanted 3 more levers installed on my first ZB. ZB turned me on to Greg Lasser in San Francisco. Before he did the work, he let me try his guitar which was set up Day style. Told him to do that to my guitar and never looked back. Thought it was easier to bend my ankle.
I can still play an Emmons setup but not nearly as well. It's easierif both E string levers are on the left. That's fairlt easy. Put either of the E string levers on the right knee, and it's a lot harder.

I have used the Emmons setup ever since I got a Pedal Steel in 1969. The steel, a Fender 2000, came with the first 3 pedals setup Emmons style. At the same time I bought the steel I also bought the (original 1 volume) Sho-Bud instruction book and that too was set up for Emmons.
I've sat in on a friend's steel that was the Day setup and it takes me about 1 song to get oriented to that setup.

The Day setup is better on a uni as you can use A and 5 together. The C pedal has no real meaning in B6.

| I ordered mine with Day. I tend to walk a little on the outside of my foot and determined that Day would be a more natural movement for my ankle. |

| I started with Day. The person I took lessons from for a while played Emmons and had a little trouble converting his instructions, so I decided to try switching to Emmons. I soon discovered that my anlke rolls a little better with the Emmons style pedal setup, so I stayed with it. I've since played a couple of other players' Day setups and had surprisingly little difficulty. Whatever works. |

I think it's Apples vs Apples. Neither is a detriment . It's how we started that is the primary factor.
I've been playing the ABC Emmons since the 70's, my motor skills are trained. There is no real purpose to switch now.
Can I play the DAY setup ? YES but not well, as I have to think about it . It makes sense , just opposite sense.
Had I begun with the DAY setup way back then I'm pretty certain I would have the same opinion now, why change.
I would rather spend my time improving the mousetrap rather than trying to re-learn how to use the mousetrap !

My experience is only with Emmons pedals. But I don't see an anatomical advantage either way.
Lots of phrases begin with B engaged, then add A. But doing the reverse is also needed. Often need to press just A, or just B (without pointy toe shoes). Some nice moving runs on strings 4 and 6 using B and C pedals, together, and B then add C.
So as for as the "ankle roll" issue, I'm stuck either way. I'm not that good, and I'm not fast, but at least I have a flexible ankle. |

I have used the Emmons set up since day one and have never played a guitar with Day pedals...so I have nothing to compare. |

If anyone wants to try a Day setup (or Emmons for those Day players), just back off the nylon tuner for the 4th string raise on the C pedal. That basically turns your C pedal into an A pedal.

I wear out my shoes on the outside of the heel. That indicates my ankle's tendency to roll to the left. I don't know if that's relevant but I definitely have a harder time on an Emmons set-up.
But I agree - physicality to one side there's clearly no advantage one way or the other.
'Day' is how I started - for no particular reason, just the way my first guitar was set up - but I'm sure if there had been no option I'd have managed things the other way around.
