and if so, is it worth picking up? i've had success with thawing out pots before. and, if not, i'm sure they can be replaced.

That's the builder these are usually attributed to; nobody seems to have concrete proof one way or the other. It's definitely worth $100 even if the pots need to be replaced.

Mine was labeled "Epitome Electric."

The Jackson Guldan (not Guidan) Company was located in Columbus, Ohio, and specialized in cheap violins and violas for the school market. They were done in by cheaper imported instruments, and were out of business by the 1970s. Many postwar Epitome lap steels used surplus prewar bridges from the Gibson Company:

The Epitome pickups I've seen were manufactured in Toledo, Ohio, by Rowe Industries (DeArmond). The tuners were Klusons out of Chicago, Illinois.

Contrary to the copy in that Craigslist example, they are not particularly rare.

This guitar was shown on the forum back a few years ago and it's up on eBay.

It's claimed it's not an Epitome, but a Guldan as in a previous Reverb ad by the same seller, same pictures.
