It's not so much the fretboard as the parallel string spacing. That drives some people crazy. Strings are usually closer together at the nut than at the bridge. _________________ -πππ- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

My favorite fretboard is the Fessenden longhorn design.
I have put that fretboard on several different brand guitars.
Jerry is very kind in selling me those.

I've never seen that. Is it different from the Fessenden? _________________ -πππ- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Bob,
My mistake, I meant to say Fessenden.
I've corrected my mistake.
Dang this old timers disease!

I had a Lamar with a neck where the frets "bled" (a printing term) off the neck...drove me absolutely crazy.
Your second picture would restore my sanity! |

Dose any one of the builders make the bridge an nut parallel so strings are the same? This would be a easy build.I have built lap steel with same string spacing at nut an bridge. |

Old Sho-Bud had fret boards with Chess pieces for the identify of frets. They were real cool I thought back about 1970. |

That just doesn't feel right to me. _________________ -πππ- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

I just went from a Sho Bud with black background and all white card logos to one that uses the alternating white and red card logos. ItΓ’β¬β’s SO much easier to quickly identify where I am.
I think a four color design would be even better, I really love the look of the Zum design too, where they are even different shapes. |

Chess pieces on a MSA for sure. Never seen them on a Bud. |

I thought of a good design a while ago. I had intended using it on a lap steel I intend to build as I thought it would be neat. But then I saw exactly the same thing on an old lap steel only this year and probably on this forum so It wonΓ’β¬β’t be original any more. It was to be the four mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, etc. there was to be one per usual fret and all four on the twelfth fret. I can still do it as I doubt these things are copyrighted. |

The Derby fret markers are exactly like the city of Charlotte NC's "queen city" logo. |

Steel players are really fussy about their fret boards, me included.
I had an Emmons and it didn't seem quite right.
I compared the fret boards with another Emmons I had and noticed that the fret lines were a little wider.
I contacted the Lashleys and they sent me some fret boards with the narrower lines.
Problem solved!!

Well, my preference would be for the Williams black and white fretboard, closely followed by the sho-Bud black and white.
I do not care for multi-coloured fretboards.
Guitars (or guitarists) don't seem to need coloured fret markers - nor, I think, do steel guitarists. _________________ Ben-Rom #017 'Lorelei', Guild D25, Epiphone 'Joe Pass', Roland 40XL, Hilton VP

If you order a Williams, you have your choice of colored or plain white fret markers. I prefer the colored markers. |

Builders seem to really lack imagination when it comes to fretboards, i.e. making them visible. The new MSA L-Frets are a step in the right direction, but a little too obvious for my taste. I find it hard to understand how little progress has been made in this area in the last 60 years. (That's over half a century, folks). Hard to fathom we're so "whoopie-wow" now on wood finishes and shiny precision mechanics, but still in the dark ages with one of the simplest things on a guitar - the fretboards.
Go figure. |

I thought it was odd at first, but I find the multi-colored fret markers on my Mullen make the higher octave much more intuitive.
I don't use fret markers on 6-string guitars, and prefer having one only at the twelfth fret.
