Ron, I didn't realize you were making cases. Do you have a link?

As I noted earlier in the thread, I keep my steel on its side while in this case, specifically to keep the pressure of the fingers. That said, I believe the old Dan Bentley (now Brand X) cases have the steel sitting directly down in the foam without ill effect.

Dan, I'm not making cases. I meant the guys out there making steels.

Danny Newsome here on the forum makes great custom cases here in Nashville. Maybe he will chime in.

Aha, gotcha. It wouldn't be that hard to rig something up to block the steel up in one of these soft cases, something like the steel workbench frame the Bob is selling, but much smaller, made out of stiff insulation boards. I did something like this with an earlier gig bag for my S-10.

Hey Len, Happy New Year,
You mentioned that you won`t be trying the backpack straps.
Any reason? Are the too flimsy or not to be trusted ?
Cheers,
Olli

I just don't feel comfortable with the thought of carrying the guitar on my back. I feel like I wouldn't have as much control over my balance. I prefer to use the handles and keep the weight close to the ground.

Oops, sorry about the ”Len”, Lee.
And thanks for the reply.
I ordered the Gator and see myself with my S12 on my back, seat in one hand and my EVANS Re200 in the other. One trip from the car to the gig.....

FYI:
An Emmons D-10 fits in the Gator nicely.
Pedal rack and legs in the front pocket.

Beautifully! I've probably done two or three dozen gigs/rehearsals. Most of those have been with a D-10 and the legs/pedal bar in a separate bag. A few have been with my S-10 Sho Bud legs and all. Love it.

Dan what’s your D10 weigh in at in that thing?

Just a heads up......

I just got a BRAND NEW one off Amazon for $90. If you search for Gator Pro-Go 49 gig bag, and when you find it, click "Buying options", they sometimes have "Used-Like New" ones much cheaper, via "Amazon Warehouse". These are usually returns or very minor cosmetic blems.

FYI.

I've just finished my case. I will include pictures of the process. It's not hard but tedious at times. I have selected a plush fur fleece that was a mistake. I will redo it in ordinary fleece.

I used 1-inch insulation board to form the custom pattern for my guitar. The pieces were 3 inches in width, or height is inserted. I used foam to pad the changer end as the tuning stops on a Kline stick out.

I've carried my guitars in Bentley/Brand X cases for about 15 years with no damage to the fingers on any of them...I've made Brand X cases for several people on this forum with no reports of damage to anybody's guitar.

Our stock cases hold the guitar up from pressure being put on the strings, keeping pressure off the changer fingers.

I wonder what your case will do, not isolating the fingers. Thoughts?

Ron

If the fingers are resting on foam it won't hurt them...
Most people rest their cases on the side...the weight ain't on the fingers at that point.

Just loaded my Stage One up in the Gator bag. Everything fits, nice and snug and well-padded. Tons of storage room for extras, too.

So......

Stage One with stock case = 45lbs....plus I have to carry an accessory bag.

Stage with Gator bag.....with volume pedal, cables, bars, picks, strings, etc = 32lbs.

That's a win, in my book!

Worked great at my session last night. One small caveat to be aware of......

When setting up now, the soft case doesn't support the steel as well when screwing in the legs, etc. It wobbles a good bit, so it might be best to put in the front legs first, then have it tilt against a wall or something, for support.

Just FYI.

Just ordered my Gator bag for my D10 Franklin. Already bought another bag for all the hardware, rack, legs, rods, etc. What I plan on doing is having a false bottom, and side made for it to keep it secure, and hopefully avoid any changer issues. Btw, I also bought the case with the wheels. I had to do it guys! One day I went to take the guitar which was in it's "road-case" out of the car, when guitar, case and myself went tumbling to the ground. That's when I said, "That's it... gotta find something different, and definitely lighter!" Well, I think this is it?

Jon Jaffe, it looks like you ordered your gator case with about 3-4 inches of clearance on each side of your steel for foam padding... is that about right?

I have a 1974 MSA D-12 that weighs 70+ lbs with pedal rack, legs and all in its original case. Thinking about getting one of these gator cases and a separate duffle bag for legs (one made for baseball bats, long enough to fit the pedal rack). I am concerned that the 5 inches of height clearance I am seeing won't be enough. Any thoughts? With knee levers and tuning pegs my steel might be closer to 6 inches tall when it's ready to be packed.

How much vertical clearance would you recommend? How about in the other dimensions?

Lee, Olli and Jon, your cases with the white/tan plush interior look pretty different than the ones I'm seeing on sweetwater.com. Would you be willing to share a link to that product?

BTW @Doug, if there were a PSG specific gig bag available for $250 right now, I would buy. If the gator bag ends up working for me, I may not want to replace it later on.

Also Jon, how did you adhere the fleece to those foam boards? It looks good!
